My cow has milk fever, can't stand, and is bloated. Will she recover?

She may have ingested a foreign body, plastic or other things, which may block her intestines. She may also have an infection or a displaced abomasum or an infection, or a bloodborne disease such as Babesiosis. Without a hands-on exam there is no way to find out what her problem is. You will need to get a veterinary doctor out to examine her. In the meantime. Make sure she drinks water and offer her her favourite food.

Unfortunately, from your description it sounds very likely that Laxmi will not survive this - and will require prompt medical care to have any chance. Mastitis is probably the number one reason so I think your vet was correct in treating for this first. It would be helpful to know if she is currently pregnant or if she has a calf on her now as the differential diagnosis would be different depending on the answer. Here are some reasons that may be causing this: * cow is close to calving * overfeeding grain * overfeeding sodium and/or potassium * heavy feeding of legume forages (results in excessive protein, calcium and potassium intake) * feeding soy cakes Some things you can try that may help improve the edema: * massaging the udder in an upward direction for 10-20 minutes twice a day after milking so as to promote circulation of fluids * forcing moderate exercise which helps stimulate lymph circulation * administering drugs such as diuretics can be used to speed up the removal of water from the body (must check with your vet first) * hydrotherapy of the udder - use cold water like from a hose to firmly spray the udder for 15 minutes twice a day So, if you and your vet can safely rule out true mastitis then I would suspect this is just edema that may be dietary related. Go over your cows diet thoroughly with your vet to see if you can get it figured out. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hello. If she has been down for several weeks, it is going to be very tough to get her back up. If she slipped on ice or snow, she may have suffered catastrophic nerve damage, & the longer she is down the more severe the nerve damage will be. The same goes for if she fractured something in her leg or shoulder. Hopefully, you have had your vet out & started her on a course of anti-inflammatory medications. If no fractures were found, you could try assisting her up in a sling, or at the very least you have her propped up with hay bales. Make sure she is shifted off her downside every 4-6 hours to prevent pressure necrosis. All you can do is keep working with her unless you can transport her to a major facility ( university veterinary center ) that can do the specialized diagnostics, surgery & rehabilitation that she may need. There are many possible reasons - spinal abscess, hip/pelvis injury, nerve damage, muscle weakness and even toxins such as lead can lead to such signs. A full neurological exam and blood tests to rule out infection and poisoning can be helpful to assess the possibility of recovery

Yes, I would be a bit worried. She may have some retained placenta or a uterine tear from the dystocia. If either of those are the case, she could end up with a life-threatening bacterial infection. I suggest you get your vet out there to check her out. It is better to be safe than sorry in this instance. Best wishes.

IT is possible your cow has mastitis. This is inflammation of the mammary gland. Mastitis can be mild or severe with a deep infection. Try to keep the teats as clean as possible. I would recommend trying to encourage the calf to nurse from the inflamed mammary gland or milk that teat often. IF the cows udder starts turning color, patient develops a fever or starts not feeling well I would recommend calling a vet for a good exam and possible antibiotics
