My 19-year-old cat is wobbling and dragging her leg. What's wrong?

Poor Bady! She needs to see the veterinarian today as she is very sick. There are several different conditions that will look like this including diabetic ketoacidosis, cancer, stroke, hyperthyroidism, infection, severe kidney disease or electrolyte in balance. These conditions all require treatment and are best addressed early on for the best potential outcome. This is an emergency, as your cat could be suffering from a riding thrombus, which is a blood clot that keeps blood flowing from the aorta into the femoral arteries. This is a very painful and life threatening condition. She could also have been a victim of a traffic accident hurting her spinal cord. Please take her to a veterinarian or an emergency room right away. The vet will want to do radiographs and a blood test and your kitty will need treatment depending on the diagnosis today.

Difficulty walking could be a sign of neurologic disease, and infection would be a concern for a cat Fluff's age. Some parasites like toxoplasmosis can cause neurologic disease, as can viruses like the feline immunodeficiency virus. Difficulty walking could also be related to trauma but this might be more obvious on an exam. If the labs are not conclusive, a referral to a neurology specialist might be recommended as sometimes advanced diagnostics like an MRI and/or spinal tap are necessary for a diagnosis. If she continues to eat and drink normally and does not seem painful I'd wait for test results to come back and discuss the next step with your veterinarian.

I would be most concerned either a neurologic issue, such as a slipped disc pushing on her spine, or a blood clot lodged in the blood supply for her rear end (called Feline Saddle Thrombosis). I would recommend taking her to a vet ASAP to further evaluation.

The signs you describe can be caused by an irregularity in the spine - this may cause the bones to compress the actual spinal cord, damaging the nerves that are responsible for controlling the back legs and tail. A veterinary neurologist would be able to further diagnose the condition and propose a treatment plan, your original vet may be able to recommend one. It could be due to a neurologic condition or perhaps an orthopedic condition causing some kind of pain or discomfort. Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Sweetie's care today! Lameness can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs.
