What can I do if my cat has white worms and I can't see a vet?

You should treat both cats, monday should be fine, and repeat in 4weeks again. Cleaning litter trays is important with immediate disposal of feces to prevent reinfection. Billy will need a deworming treatment to kill the worms. I recommend having him seen by a vet Monday, and bring along a sample of the worms for the vet to examine. The vet can diagnose what worms he is suffering from, and can give him a deworming treatment for them.

Unfortunately, I am unable to prescribe medication for Coco without having examined her. However, your veterinarian can quickly determine the exact type of parasites present with a fecal sample and prescribe the appropriate treatment. Because many parasites are transmitted by fleas, it is important for Coco to be on a monthly flea preventative. The two main types of worms you can see with the human eye is tapeworms and roundworms. Since these don't look like tapeworms to you, purchase an over the counter dewormer for roundworms and give it to see to see if it helps. If you do take her in, make sure to get her vaccines done. Rabies vaccines are very important for any animals who has contact with people so you may consider having this done regardless. It sounds like Boots may have intestinal parasites. There are many different kinds, but we usually lump them into 3 groups: round/hook/whip worms look like spaghetti, tapeworms look like flat noodles or small grains of rice, and coccidia or giardia are other types that are not visibly seen. You can try an OTC dewormer that treats the specific type of worm you are seeing and make sure it is repeated in a few weeks as directed on the label, but I recommend that Boots go to a vet. She is way overdue for kitten vaccines and a rabies shot (which is required in all cats and dogs by law - even if they will never ever step foot outside). There are many nasty cat viruses that can cause illness and even death. Your vet can also test a fecal sample to determine the most appropriate treatment timeline for her individual parasite(s).

In general, the best way to tell if Salem has worms is to take a fecal sample to your veterinarian for analysis - intestinal parasite eggs are microscopic, so most of the time you won't be able to see anything just by looking. Certain types of worms, such as roundworms and tapeworms, can sometimes be seen in the stool - but if you're not seeing anything, this is not a reliable indicator that your pet doesn't have worms. To get rid of worms, you will need to deworm Salem with a broad-spectrum dewormer labeled for cats. You can find dewormers at most pet stores that will cover some parasites, but you will need a prescription dewormer from your vet in order to treat tapeworms as these are not killed by over-the-counter dewormers.

Many times you will not see intestinal parasites until the animals are critically sick. It's recommended to deworm young puppies and kittens every two weeks for at least three cycles, due to the lifecycle of the parasites. I would recommend getting a product labeled for kittens such as pyrantel pamoate. Make sure you weigh them and get accurate weights to dose the medication. As soon as you are able I do still recommend a veterinary exam as they will need vaccines, feline leukemia testing and there are other parasites that the pyrantel may not address. Look in your area as there are often low cost vaccination clinics available through pet stores or feed stores if a full service clinic is not possible. Also check with your local veterinarian as many times they may offer a rate for a litter of kittens versus charging each animal individually.
