Why is my cat eating more, losing weight, and licking her rear?

Hello sorry to hear about Norman. The behavioral changes, the weight loss, and unkempt coat are all signs of hyperthyroidism. If you are also seeing a ravenous appetite (hence the hunting) and increased drinking and urination they may also fit with hyperthyroidism. The only way to know is to test his blood and measure the levels of thyroid hormone. When an senior cat is eating more frequently yet losing weight, this can be a sign of hyperthyroidism. With hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland is secreting too much hormone which causes an increase in the pets metabolism and subsequent weight loss. Have your vet check Hopes T4 levels to see if she is hyperthyroid and in need of medication to help stabilize her hormones so that she doesn't continue to waste away. This is easily diagnosed and treated with medication (i.e. Methimazole). Your vet will also want to run baseline bloodwork on your pet to make sure no other disease processes are there.

This could be caused by a variety of causes including gastrointestinal chronic nutrient malabsorption, endocrine problems (diabetes for example) and others like presence of kidney failure and tumors. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Please get him seen by your vet as soon as possible, behavior changes and weight loss in an older cat are always a concern. I would recommend blood and urine tests to rule out a uti, kidney issues or a hormonal condition such as diabetes or thyroid disease

I definitely think you should have Dahlia examined by your veterinarian. A few diseases that could cause an increased appetite with weight loss include intestinal parasites, diabetes, and hyperthyroidism. Your vet can examine Dahlia and her stool, and may recommend checking lab work if parasites seem unlikely. All of these diseases are very treatable, but it's important to get a diagnosis quickly.
