My cat has watery eyes, wheezing, and drinks a lot. How can I help?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

I have a cat I took in that is believed by his vet to have internal damage or a defect to his nasal pathway and cavity, up to his tear ducts. His eyes pour out like a faucet and he dry wheezes all day. Besides the old tricks of steam or a humidifier, how can I help him until his exploratory scope is done? He's becoming more and more reclusive but also dependent- and despite great bloodwork he chugs down water and food all day. I'm at a loss.

HI there and thanks for posting. You can also try wiping his eyes with a warm wash cloth several times a day in addition to the humidifier. Might also be a good idea to make sure they tested his thyroid as increase thirst and appetite can be a sign of hyperthyroidism. Good idea he is getting a scope done to find out what is causing his upper respiratory signs and sinus issues.
