My cat is vomiting hairballs and losing fur. What should I do?

Pet's info: Cat | Persian | Male | neutered | 1 year and 9 months old | 7.76 lbs

Simba was doing vomiting daily since august my vet took xrays etc but coudnt found anything they give medicines ,laxative that didnot stop vomiting i try to chnge his brands of food then after changing 3-4 brands at last he stops doing vomit at a particular brand then after some days he again started vomiting but this time he vomits at the duration of 10-12 days then i observe he is having too much hairfall and in his vomit there are hairballs ..now i think his hair is the reason.how to stop it?

Poor guy. It sounds like Simba could very well have inflammatory bowel disease if he is vomiting this much. The next best step here though to ensure we have not missed anything is some baseline bloodwork (check organ function and clues) and an abdominal ultrasound to look at the intestines for signs of inflammation.
If inflammatory bowel disease is the most likely cause, then Simba will need to go on a prescription diet for best results. Some good options to consider are: Royal Canin Hypoallergenic Hydrolyzed protein, Hlil's Z/D Ultra or Royal Canin Selected protein PR. A short course of steroids should also be considered to help calm things down.

Another possible causes here is a hairball obstruction, so it is important to get Simba to your vet for radiographs of his stomach and look into this possible cause. If a hairball trichobezoar (hairball mass) is the cause, then it may need surgical removal. If it is not a severe case then your vet likely will try some stool softeners and hairball formula to see if this can resolve the issue.

My cat is losing weight, hair, and has skin rashes. What should I do?

Hair loss can have many causes in cats- skin infection such as a bacterial infection, allergy such as to food or a flea allergy (especially if Simba is not on any flea preventative) or fungal infection like ringworm can all be causes. Sometimes anxiety can cause cats to lick off their fur but this is typically a diagnosis that is made after all other health conditions are ruled out first. The weight loss could be due to due to simply eating less (this would be a good thing if Simba was previously overweight). Of course, weight loss can also be caused by many different underlying health condition such as certain infections, hyperthyroidism, liver, kidney disease, certain cancers and other endocrine disease. I would recommend Simba see his veterinarian soon for an evaluation. Your veterinary may take a skin scraping and hair sample from the area of hair loss and may recommend running blood work or other diagnostics as necessary. I hope this helps!

My cat keeps throwing up hairballs despite daily brushing. What to do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lilly. A longhaired cat should only produce 3-4 hairballs per year. Any more than that is considered abnormal. If her initial blood panel came back normal, I typically recommend a secondary panel that checks for pancreatitis, a disease known as pancreatic exocrine insufficiency as well as cobalamin and folate levels. This can reveal the cause of the vomiting or give some treatment options for her. Inflammatory bowel disease is common cause of chronic vomiting. This will typically result in a low cobalamin levels. It can not be diagnosed without intestinal biopsies, but those are very invasive. An abdominal ultrasound can give a lot of information and rule out other causes of vomiting. If I suspect this to be the case, I will treat the patient with a prescription hydrolyzed diet to help decrease inflammation and sometimes medication as well. I hope this information helps!

Why isn't my cat eating after a hairball? Is it an emergency?

Poor Simba! There are many things that can cause cats to stop eating, so I wouldn't necessarily assume this is due to a hairball. Simba could have a GI problem like pancreatitis or an intestinal obstruction, a systemic illness such as liver or kidney disease, or may have ingested something toxic. If he hasn't been eating since Tuesday, this is very concerning and warrants an immediate vet visit. If your regular veterinarian isn't open, then I would recommend taking him to an emergency clinic today to be seen. The veterinarian there can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and see what kind of treatment is needed.

Aw poor Simba! I'm sorry to hear he's sick! It would be a good idea to have him checked out by a veterinarian to ensure he does not have an intestinal obstruction, infection, or other cause of vomiting and decreased appetite. He may need injections to stop his vomitng and fluids to rehydrate him. I'm concerned that 4 days of not eating can cause serious illness in a cat so the sooner he sees a veterinarian the better. Why is my 11-year-old cat vomiting black hairballs and losing weight?

Hi there. 11 is not particularly old for a cat, so I would hope that Sam has many more good years left. There are many things that can cause vomiting and weight loss in a kitty this age, including diabetes, hyperthyroisism, chronic pancreatitis, and chronic kidney disease. The dermatitis is likely a separate issue, which could be due to allergies, fleas, or a bacterial or fungal skin infection. Most of these problems are very treatable once a diagnosis is made, so I would suggest taking Sam to the vet for an exam when you are able to. He/she can do blood work or other testing if needed to help determine what is causing his symptoms and get him started on appropriate treatment.

It's possible Snickers may be dealing with some problematic hairballs, however if the vomiting has been going on this long it is best to seek veterinary care for a complete exam to make sure there isn't another underlying cause. You can attempt to groom Snickers more at home by brushing daily and offering hairball paste (found in most pet stores), however if the vomiting continues, vet care is needed.
