My cat vomited through his nose. Will the blockage clear itself?

Poor Tigger. Bile from the stomach is very acidic and can irritate any tissue, but the tissue in the nose is very sensitive to such an irritating substance, so I'm not surprised that Tigger started sneezing and gagging if that happened. I would expect it to take a little a while to resolve, but it should continue to slowly improve over the next few hours or by tomorrow. Good luck! Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Pongkoy! Most upper respiratory infections in cats are viral. If the discharge from his nose is clear then you can just monitor him. Hopefully he can clear the viral infection. If he is lethargic, not eating, and/or the discharge changes to yellow or green he would need to see a Veterinarian for antibiotics. I would clear his nose a couple of times a day and you can keep him in a steamy bathroom twice a day for 10-15 mins. Be sure that you start Pongkoys kitten vaccinations in the next 1-2 weeks. Hello, again. I would just watch him for now. More than likely he will sneeze out anything remaining. Again, as long as he is not having any difficulties breathing, I would just keep an eye on things. He may have a bit of an upper respiratory infection going on & these are pretty self limiting after a week or so. If he is otherwise happy & eating well, he should not need antibiotics at this time. He will not inhale this into his lungs as this is pretty impossible to do through the nasal passages. So if he is not in any distress, he will be fine. Cats can be very dramatic with liquid medication and some may have gotten up her nose. Aspirating in to the lungs would be more serious. As long as she only sounds congested in her throat/nose area she should be ok. Watch for loss of appetite, lethargy or yellow-green discharge from the nose. If any of those symptoms occur she should see your Vet. Have a great day!

Hairballs shouldn't cause this much trouble coming up, though I can't be certain why it was such an issue this time. However, based on your description of Persyk after the event, it sounds like she has some vomitus in her nasal passages. A small amount of liquid should resolve on it's own within a day or two, but if there was any solid material, it could have become trapped and would continue to cause the nasal pain, sneezing, running nose, etc. I would say that if she isn't back to normal in a day or so, she needs to be checked out by a vet. After physical examination, the vet may recommend sedation to flush the nasal passage and do a more thorough exam.

If he is making some abnormal breathing sounds, it is possible that he could have aspirated (breathed some of the fluid into his lungs). This can lead to aspiration pneumonia, which can make dogs very sick. He may have some inflammation of his esophagus or his palate that is causing him to make a snorting noise, or he could even have something that is partially obstructing his airway. I would monitor Patton closely for any changes in behavior such as excessive lethargy or anorexia, or continued vomiting or diarrhea. Also watch for changes to his breathing effort - if he appears to be using his belly to help him breathe, this could be a sign of lung disease such as pneumonia and he should be seen by a veterinarian right away. If his snorting noise does not resolve on it's own over the next 24-48 hours, or if he develops any other clinical signs, I would have him evaluated by a veterinarian. They may recommend bloodwork and/or x-rays to look for evidence of lung disease. I hope this is helpful!

However, if she continues to vomit, this may be due to an obstruction and further therapy may be needed. If the issue continues, I recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Best of luck!
