My cat vomited through his nose. Will the blockage clear itself?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 1 month old | 14 lbs

My cat vomited violently during the night, as it even came through his nose. When I woke up, I realized his nose was blocked and was breathing through his mouth. It got better after i cleaned around his nose, and he now sleeps while breathing through his nose again. But there's still some blockage. Is it likely that the nose clear out by itself?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bandit!

His nose should improve over the next day or two. The vomit likely caused some inflammation. Continue to monitor and clear any discharge from his nose. If he continues to vomit, doesn’t eat or the congestion doesn’t clear he should see a Vet.

I hope this helps and I wish Bandit the best!
