My cat with a tumor on pain meds is acting better. Is it temporary?

Hello Linda, So sorry that Bugger has this issue. The other thing you can do to make him more comfortable is to give him oral pain medications, such as piroxicam and/or buprenorphine. Those medications will reduce discomfort associated with the tumor. You will need to get those medications from your veterinarian as they are prescription only. Topical medications unfortunately, do not help. Again, I am sorry that you and Bugger are dealing with this. Cancer is a terrible disease.

Hello, and thanks for your question. I'm sorry to hear about Trixie's diagnosis! It's great that you're working with an oncologist; I can tell you're wanting to provide the best care for Trixie. Most cats do feel better and perk up on the medication. If her appetite was down, you may see her start eating a bit better, and if you had noticed lethargy you may see her perk up and act more social again. Often we can see an increase in both appetite and thirst, which leads to more urination as well. Generally we don't see too many other side effects from the medications, and your oncologist will want to know if you do have concerns with how Trixie is feeling on the meds, as they may tweak the dose based on how Trixie's responding. I have seen a few animals go into remission, but I would defer to the oncologist on the actual numbers, as they see far more cases than we do in general practice! Hope this helps. Typically I assume that cancer is painful and will always offer pain medications. Otherwise, I have owners watch for decreased appetite, hiding and crying as these can all be signs of discomfort. Hi there. I'm sorry to hear about what you're going through with Dude. Think about the things that make Dude happy. Cats often sleep a lot, especially as they age. If he's still interactive with you, eating, and using the litter box then it sounds like his quality of life is good still. If these things begin to change, and he's not doing the things he likes, then his quality of life is not good and it is reasonable to let him go. All my best to you and Dude.

Unfortunately nothing. Many human pain medications are toxic to cats, and cause death themselves, but it's not a pain free death. Giving them human pain medications will make things much worse. Dying is not a pain free process and if Skyler is dying, taking him into a vet immediately to put him to sleep will be the kindest thing for him. Please take him into a vet now.

Good morning. I'm so sorry to hear about Mimi. If you have seen a veterinarian recently then I would reach out to them for some pain management. Hopefully they will prescribe something for you over the phone since they are aware of her condition. There are not really any safe over the counter pain medications for cats. Also, you may want to discuss with your veterinarian their process for euthanasia. It's not always pleasant to talk about, but having a plan and knowing what to expect is usually very helpful when the time comes. I'm so sorry Mimi is sick, and I wish you both the best.
