My cat has a tongue problem. Is it urgent or contagious for cats?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Egyptian Mau | Female | unspayed | 3 years and 7 months old | 6 lbs

My 4 year old kitty Thumbelina developed this thing in the middle of her tongue, I can say without a doubt that it was not there yesterday, I noticed it today when she went to eat dry food and didn’t seem to be able to pick it up, she would just drop it out of her mouth, I did get her to eat some wet food and she is still drinking water. She seems to be acting normal, no fever. is this something that I should seek medical attention right away for and is it contagious bc I have 7 other cats.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Thumbelina. She could hand injured her tongue. Since she can eat wet food, it’s not an emergency. Keep feeding her wet food over the weekend, and have her seen by a vet on Monday. If she stops eating or appears to be in significant pain, then take her into an emergency vet. Best of luck.
