My new cat is very thin, eats constantly, but has no bowel movements.

Ollie needs to be examined by his veterinarian for a few conditions including hyperthyroidism, hypertension, intestinal parasites and Felv/FIV. It sounds like he is very sick and I recommend to have him examined within the next 24 hours. Getting the correct diagnosis and starting treatment quickly tend to give pets the best prognosis. Oscar may need fecal samples and cultures or other testing sent to an outside lab if that hasn't already been done. Some kittens benefit from prescription diets to help with diarrhea and a probiotic such as Forti Flora may help. Oscar is a cutie. I hope he is feeling better soon.

Poor Canelo. I am sorry that it has been difficult to get him to gain weight. With him being young and petite and intact then I would not be too concerned. Of course, without doing an exam I cannot say this for sure. If he is really skinny and all of his bones are showing then yes, I would be more concerned. If his bones are not showing and you cannot see his ribs then I would be less concerned. Some cats are more petit and slender especially if they are very active and outdoors. I would also recommend to have him neutered as that may also help him gain weight. Finally, if he is really skinny and you are able to see his bones, I would recommend to ensure your vet tested his thyroid (high thyroid isn't common is young cats but possible). Then I would recommend to increase the amount of food you are feeding and if he is still not gaining weigh then the next step would be abdominal x-rays or ultrasound. I hope this helps some. Hello. An occasional bit of blood in the stool is nothing to be overly concerned about, but having larger stools & being a bit thin is a little concerning. This may be an indication of some type of food intolerance. The first thing to try is switching Willow off any fish based foods, canned & dry. This means checking bags of food because many times a diet that is meat based will sneak in some form of fish meal into the ingredients. I had the same difficulty with one of my cats & this improved him tremendously. Give this a few weeks & see if you notice any difference. So you should decrease the amount of food you are feeding especially since Oscar is neutered and is probably an indoor only cat. Indoor cats do not require as much food as what most people think. Maybe even as little as 1/4 to 1/3 cup of dry food per day but of course it does depend on what you are feeding him. Best thing to do is measure his food, don't feed free choice with a full bowl of food, and then start cutting back at least 25% or a quarter of the food per day, including treats. The anal itching could be tapeworms and that is usually flea related, the pet ingests a flea while grooming and the tapeworm eggs hatch and create problems. It could also be fleas, mites, anal gland problems. Best thing is to have your vet evaluate Oscar, advise nutritional issues, and identify what is causing the itch. Most likely, the cause is determined by physical exam only and then expressing the anal glands if they are enlarged. If Oscar is good they might be able to express them while he is awake. Otherwise sedation is sometimes required. Also skin infections or dermatitis can cause itching. Good luck with Oscar

Cats can be thin for a variety of reasons. Make sure he has been checked for parasites or dewormed recently. Some cats will also become thin due to kidney disease or hyperthyroidism. Sometimes this can happen even before kidney disease begins. Any GI disease will also cause a thin body. Lastly, some cats have a fast metabolism. Make sure Choo Choo's bloodwork is all normal and that parasites are not a concern. Then you may try focusing on nutrition. I recommend the brand Royal Canin. It's diets are all tested and formulated to contain appropriate protein levels that are high quality and easy to digest. Feed one of the higher calorie diets available. This may help to put weight on him. You can also supplement with a high calorie canned like A/D or R/S.

I would recommend having some blood work performed on your cat. Hyperthyroidism is a common disease in middle aged to older cats that causes an increase metabolism so cats are often very hungry but unable to gain weight. I would also recommend having your vet check a fecal sample to ensure that Koda does not have any intestinal parasites as this can cause weight loss as well. I hope this helps.
