My cat's tail is limp, and he's licking it a lot. Is it injured?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10.1 lbs

Hi. Thanks for taking this question. I came home today to find my cat's tail hanging limp. He complains when I touch around a quarter of the way down. No sores or swollen areas. The end and base of his tail are totally fine - I can scratch his back and he purrs as normal. He's eating fine and walking fine and jumping fine but he's licking at his tail a lot.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Raoul!

I would worry about trauma: someone pulled his tail, his tail was ran over and fractured or other nerve damage. Ideally he should be seen by a Vet to potentially X-ray to the tail to look for fractures.

I hope this helps and I wish Raoul the best!
