My cat's tail hair is thinning. Should I be worried about it?

My cat's tail recently stared looking like this. It used to be fuller. Should I be worried?

If you are noticing sudden hair thinning, this could be an indication of a hormonal disease. This may also be normal as some cats shed more than others. The hair may need some time to grow back in after shedding out. If she is overgrooming that area, that could lead to thinning of the hair as well. One thing to consider adding in to the diet would be omega 3 fish oil capsules (welactin liquid) to see if this helps the overall appearance of the coat. I hope this helps! If the hair continues to become more thin or falls out completely, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. The hair loss around the ears may be normal. Some cats just have very thin or no hair in that area. As long as it is symmetrical (same on both sides) I would not be overly worried. Just have your vet check it at her next exam. You know her best so, if you are really worried, it is never a bad idea to have her examined now. It's up to you. Great question!

Without a photo, its hard to say whats happening with Ruby. If the skin looks totally normal (no redness, flakey skin, scabs...etc) then its possible Ruby is simply over grooming. Some cats with lick their fur until it thins out as a habit (like people biting their nails). Hairloss in general can indicate many things: parasites, fungal infections, thyroid conditions, metabolic imbalances. When in doubt, I recommend a trip to the vet to have her thoroughly checked out. The most common sign of a thyroid problem in cats is weight loss. Hair loss around the tail could be secondary to a skin infection, fleas, allergies, etc. The best thing would be to schedule an appointment with your vet for a physical examination to determine the cause and treat. Your cat may need an antibiotic and/or an anti-inflammatory to treat.

If you notice several pets affected, things like fleas, skin mites and ringworm become more suspicious. I recommend to check them/treat them for fleas. If they do not respond with 2 weeks or if they start getting worse, figure out a way to have them examined. You may look into financing through Care Credit or Scratch Pay. My dog's tail is thinning and body hair isn't growing. What's wrong?

If the hair thinning seems to be on the tail and the rest of his body and he is not itching, licking, or scratching the hair loss, then it may be due to an underlying endocrine disease such as Cushing's disease, diabetes, or hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). I would recommend Hugo see his veterinarian soon for this. Your veterinarian will do a physical exam and may recommend blood work to check for any underlying health conditions such as the ones mentioned above among others to help determine a cause so he can get treated most appropriately. Hello. Decreased hair quality in cats, especially of her age, could be due to hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, diabetes, liver disease, parasites, and overall poor health and grooming habits due to arthritis or obesity. My cat has flaky skin on her tail. What causes it and how to treat?

Flaky skin could be a sign of allergies, some hormonal diseases like hyperthyroidism, poor nutrition or even fleas. If there is no hair loss and her skin appears normal otherwise you could ask your veterinarian about using an oral fish oil supplement to see if that helps. If there is any hair loss, red skin or scabs I would recommend having her examined by your veterinarian. Unfortunately cats tend to lick most topical products so I do not typically recommend using them.
