My cat's eye is swollen, watery, and she's sneezing. Should I call the vet?

It looks like Kitty might have an upper respiratory infection causing conjunctivitis. A viral infection is most common, although secondary bacterial infections can also occur. A scratch on the surface of the eye could also cause redness and discharge but would not cause sneezing. I would recommend seeing your veterinarian for an exam. They can check for a scratch on the cornea or prescribe medications to treat a respiratory infection.

I would guess that Greggy has an upper respiratory infection. This can cause eye swelling and discharge from conjunctivitis along with sneezing and nasal discharge. A scratch on the eye might also be possible. If there are absolutely no vets around today (you might want to try travelling to see an emergency vet) then I'd recommend keeping Greggy comfortable until he can see a vet - he may need antibiotics and prescription eye ointment. You should make sure he's eating and drinking - you may want to try offering canned food if his appetite seems decreased.

If your pet has tested negative and has been vaccinated for feline leukemia and feline aids, you shouldn't have to worry about those. This could simply be an upper respiratory infection (if sneezing or nasal drainage have been seen), allergies are common this time of year, feline herpes (if you've seen an ulcer or bump), or maybe even something going on with just the eye. You'll want to visit your local Veterinarian for an exam. He/she may prescribe an antibiotic depending on Zoey's condition.

Herpesvirus and calicivirus are very common in cats and many cats are exposed as kittens then continue to have mild outbreaks throughout their lives, particularly during times of stress. Symptoms include watery or red eyes with clear discharge, squinting, sneezing and clear nasal discharge. If this is new for Cass I'd recommend having your veterinarian take a look at her to see what they think. I would not recommend using any eye washes or giving antihistamines - this would be unlikely to help and could make the symptoms worse.

Hello. It is very common for an upper respiratory tract infection to also cause eye symptoms. This may include a clear watery discharge and inflammation of the eyelids and conjunctiva. If the discharge becomes thick and yellow/ green or your cat squints or is holding the eye closed, she should be rechecked and started in eye medication as well. It sounds like Bubba has a bad eye infection and may also have an upper respiratory disease causing the sneezing. This does have to be treated by a vet, as leaving any eye problem untreated can lead to vision loss. This cannot be treated at home. Please find the closest vet to you and take him into one now.
