Why is my cat's paw swollen and she's acting so quiet and clingy?

There is a good chance she could have an abscess. It needs to be opened and drained and then put on antibiotics for the infection. They can also give her some pain medications to help. If it is not an abscess then they may recommend doing an X-ray and make sure she didn’t break something. So I would have her looked at by tour vet. Hope she feels better soon

The reason is that this may be a local infection site which can be painful and cause her discomfort. Another possibility is a traumatic injury which may need further care or even a tumor. Since he goes outside, he could also have an abscess/infection in his paw or he may have an injury. He should definitely be examined by a vet to determine the exact cause. He may need an antibiotic or an anti-inflammatory to treat. Your vet can also take an x-ray, if needed, to help diagnose. There isn't much you can do at home until we know the exact cause of the swelling. Hope he feels better soon.

He may not be in overt pain but he is definitely uncomfortable if he is licking the foot and not wanting to put much weight on it. It is not likely to be a sprain/strain as those don't usually swell up. The foot is either fractured (broken) or there is an infection in the foot. Sometimes the infection enters through a broken nail or a break in the skin of the foot somewhere. Until you can get him to the vet in the morning I suggest you soak the foot for 5-10 minutes in warm epsom salt water (if he will let you). You can do this every few hours. If he won't let you then just leave it alone until the vet can look at it. I don't think it is an emergency. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Waiting until the morning would mean that she is in a lot of pain until then. If you get her seen right now, she can receive appropriate pain medication to help relieve this discomfort. This may be a fractured bone and not having any pain medications until the morning would mean that she is in extreme discomfort until then. Poor Malie! It definitely looks swollen. Swelling like that can be caused from several things like a local infection/abscess, a soft tissue injury, bug bite and much more. You can try some benadryl twice a day (see link below) and restrict her activity (no running, jumping, or playing) to see if it improves. If it isn't improving or worsens, I would have your vet take a look at it. Your vet will be able to help determine the cause and get her started on the proper meds to help her feel better. Based on what you are describing I would be concerned about a catfight wound that has caused abscesses. Often times if one cat bites another the wounds become infected and form large swellings. These can be painful and require antibiotics to heal. Your cat may have been injured since she is in heat by a male cat trying to mate with her. I would recommend taking your cat into the vet to be checked out to make sure there is no infection going on. If it is not infection causing the swelling then she may be having an allergic reaction to something, like a insect bite or sting.
