My cat swallowed a thread from a toy. Should I take him to the vet?

Thread can cause something we call a linear foreign body which can be very serious. If she swallowed a short thread (so up to 5-6cm long), she should be fine. Long cotton threads pose risk of developing linear foreign body, which is when one end of the thread is anchored in the stomach and the rest of the thread is in the small intestine. You need to monitor Moon closely for the next 2-3 days. If she starts to vomit, goes off her food and become lethargic, you need to take her to your local vets as an emergency.

If it's been less than two hours since Ollie ate it, take him into a vet now to induce vomiting. Otherwise, you will have to monitor him. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, or lethargy, he will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.

Keep a close eye on him. He may cough it back up like a hairball but luckily cats systems are not strangers to feathers as cats often prey on birds. Feathers are usually flexible enough that if they don't cough them up, they will pass on their own, and are digestible at least to some degree. If he shows any signs of illness though, off to the vet.

A two inch long fluffy string likely will not cause a foreign body obstruction. It willl ikely pass the natural way. Should your cat start vomiting, get lethargic or get diarrhea within the next week then you should have her examined by your vet.

It happens that a longer piece of thread or yarn can tangle around the base of the tongue or gets stuck above the soft palate. It could be the case in Delta. Ife the yarn has tangled up around the tongue, you should be able to see it if Delta lets you open her mouth wide. If it got stuck above the palate, you won't be able to see it. It is not much that you can do at home to help her. She should be seen by a vet for sedation and throat examination.

You can ask as many questions you like! I would take her into a vet to be safe, as these strings can often get caught in a cat's mouth around the tongue. The other problem with strings is that they can cause a linear foreign body. If you can get her into a vet now to induce vomiting, then you can prevent an obstruction from happening. The vet can also check her mouth to see if it's stuck in there.
