My healthy young cat died suddenly after a jump. What happened?

His untimely death could have been due to a heart condition leading his heart to fail. Any underlying systemic disease that was going on that you did not know about could have progressed to the point where it overwhelmed James' system leading to his acute death. Unfortunately, it is difficult to speculate as there can be so many causes. I would discuss this with your veterinarian as he / she may be able to perform an autopsy on James to help determine what the cause of his untimely death could have been. Hi, I am really sorry to hear this. It is difficult to understand what could have happened, I think maybe a blood clot ? As these can cause sudden death. However without having checked her over and without a full clinical history it is difficult to understand exactly what could have happened. I am sorry to hear about Sweetpea's passing, that sounds extremely distressing for you and your family. It is very possible she was injured in the fall and that caused her passing, or there may have been an underlying health issue that caused it as well, however without an exam or necropsy (animal autopsy) it would be impossible to say what caused her passing. Hello and I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your kitty. It is so heart breaking to lose them. Without an autopsy, one can't be certain, but most often in a cat without any other clinical signs, it's usually a bad heart that will cause sudden death. One of the most most common heart diseases in cats is called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. It often has no symptoms. It is often not detectable on a physical exam. Sometimes there will be fluid in the lungs from congestion in the lungs that can leak out after passing. I hope this helps to provide some closure and with time, I hope your heart heals. I'm so sorry this happened. Unfortunately there is no way for us to tell you why she died by looking at some photos. If you want to know for sure you will need to have a vet do an autopsy. If this way a young cat the two most common reasons for sudden death are trauma (like hit by a car) or poison ingestion.

He may have had an injury, been hit by a car or he had a congenital heart defect that caused a blood clot at the bifurcation of the aorta (that paralyses hind legs and hurts terribly). This can also cause a clot in the lungs which would cause breathing problems. Unfortunately most cats with these blood clots die within a short time. I am so sorry for your loss. This is very sad.

First off, I'm so sorry you suddenly lost Leo! There could be a couple of things that could have caused his death. It could be he got into something toxic, or he may have been hit by a car causing severe internal injuries but no apparent outside injuries. It may be that whatever ultimately caused his death made him so sick and/or injured that he was unable to make it home to you. If his body is still at the vet, you can request that the vet does a necropsy (an autopsy for animals) on him. That may give you some answers as to the cause of his death.
