My cat has a strange mark. Is it a wound? Can he wait for the vet?

If Rowdy seems to be eating, drinking, and in good spirits, then his vet visit can wait until the morning. Hello and thank you for your question. That spot on Floyd could be several things including a wound, allergies, skin mites, bacterial infection or ringworm (which humans can get). From the photo, that doesn't look like a puncture wound but if you find one or if there is a potential this is a fight wound, I recommend to have him examined within 24 hours. Bite wounds often become infected. If treated with antibiotics early, abscesses are less likely to form. There are a couple things you can do at home and they can help but they may not address the underlying cause. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for pets, this can help improve the skin health. You can wash the lesion once a day with a medicated wipe for cats (not his whole body, just the lesion) if he will allow you. Don't get bitten. Just so you know, cat bites almost always get infected and could land you in the hospital. Also protect the area from trauma by having your kitty wear an elizabethan collar at all times. If the lesion does not start improving within a week or if it is getting worse, have him examined by the veterinarian. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

It looks like it may be healing. If it isn't big, full of pus, painful to him, he's eating, and isn't lethargic, you can wait until Monday to have him seen. Otherwise, take him into a vet immediately.

It may be local irritation or infection. A tick bite, tiny bite or claw wound is also possible, especially if you have other pets or if Stella goes outside. Monitor for redness, swelling, bruising, discharge or lethargy. It looks to be healing on its own. You can have Stella examined by your veterinarian for a more definitive diagnosis and treatment (if indicated).

The wound doesn't look infected or Bloody more like a scrape that has removed hair. I would simply keep him warm and comfortable until you get to the vets. Try and feed little and often as they can over indulge when they gave been away a while.

What you're describing sounds more likely to be a skin problem of some kind (allergies, etc.) vs. an actual wound or something more serious, although of course it's always hard to say without being able to see her in person. It does sound like this is something that should be seen by a vet, since skin issues in cats that are severe enough to cause hair loss and raw spots will virtually always need prescription meds to treat effectively. But if she's acting normal otherwise (eating and drinking, relatively active, no other obvious symptoms), then I wouldn't consider it to be an emergency. It should be okay to call your regular vet's office and get an appointment scheduled for her when you're able to, hopefully within the next week or two. :)

Poor Mako! The lesion on his face could be due to a number of different things including mange, a skin infection, allergies or a contact reaction to something in his environment. If he is acting fine and eating and drinking normally I think that you can wait until Thursday as long as the lesion does not seem to be getting worse. Your veterinarian may do a skin cytology or skin scraping to get a better idea of what's going on.
