My cat is straining to pee after two blockages. Is a third coming?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Theo! These cats do well. Yes, the 2-3 weeks post surgery are rough but it is temporary. He shouldn't urinate differently. All cats squat to pee. There should be no outward difference. Just so you know, the surgery is to prevent a urinary obstruction. It will NOT prevent stress induced bladder inflammation where he will urinate small amounts, have bloody urine, urinate out of the box or whatever symptoms he shows. He may still have those type of flare ups and need to be on medications or a prescription diet for life. I would do the surgery. He will be fine. The short post-operative period shouldn't deter you. None of these conditions improve on their own, but instead require some level of treatment or management. So the treatment they gave him so far is basically they drained his bladder and treated him for an underlying urinary tract infection. However if he is developing a blockage he will need to be catheterized and treated with medications to help keep his urinary sphincter relaxed. You are doing the right thing by feeding him canned food, as this will increase his water intake and help promote a healthy bladder. However if he does become completely blocked (blocked Tom), he will need emergency procedures to free up the blockage and empty his bladder, as they mentioned already. I would recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian. He could have something mild like a urinary tract infection but he can also have stones or crystals in his urine that is causing discomfort. They can check a urine to see if it is an infection or if there are crystals and he may need an X-ray if they are suspecting stones. Yes, if he is blocked then he requires a catheter inserting. It is not uncommon for cats to re-block or for muscle spasm to become severe enough to prevent voluntary urination and a temporary or even long term surgical resolution may be required. An obstructed bladder prevents waste products from being excreted from the body and can rapidly become life threatening if not relieved

Poor Oreo! After a blockage, cats might only urinate small amounts frequently, but as long as he's peeing, that's positive. I would expect to see some blood, as he has sustained trauma to his urethra with the blockage and subsequent unblocking. I would continue to monitor him very closely, as reblocking can occur 7-14 days from the time of discharge. This is because the urologic syndrome that led to blocking in the first place is still continuing and as long as the episode continues, blocking is a possibility. Any loss of appetite or vomiting should be reported to your veterinarian at once. If there is any concern about reblocking, your vet can determine fairly easily if the cat has re-blocked.

Male cats can have a condition where they are unable to pee. Often we will say a cat "is blocked". This is a medical emergency because when an animal cannot urinate, it can back up their kidneys, and cause them to become toxic, very sick, and possibly pass away. I would continue to watch Gulbi as you are. He needs to produce a nice stream of urine, and large quantities of urine in the litter box. If there is any straining, especially frequent straining, or just tiny circles of urine in the litter box, then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian. He may need some pain medications, and if he already has some, he may need some additional ones. It may be helpful to put Gulbi in a small room by himself for a couple of days, like the bathroom, with his litter box. This way you can keep an eye on his litter box and the amount of urine he is putting out. If he is licking at his neuter area, I would pick up a cone from the pet store.
