Why is my adopted cat still sick after finishing antibiotics?

Since there are still symptoms of the infection then he needs to be rechecked for further treatment. Some cats need pulse therapy medicine to help keep it under control. Also a lot of upper respiratory infections in cats are viral induced and take time to fully resolve. They do make anti virals you can add to the food to help clear the infection also

I am sorry to hear that! It sounds like he has had a good work up so far. I suspect your vet may want to recheck imaging (if not done already) to ensure the foreign object is no longer present. If there is a concern the infection has never fully resolved, you could ask for a referral to an internal medicine specialist (https://www.ecvim-ca.org/specialist-listings/internal-medicine-specialists-list). If the infection has been cleared but keeps recurring, you could ask to review the pros and cons of therapies such as anti-viral medications, probiotics, Cerenia or long-term antibiotic courses. Hello, thank you for your question about Cairo. Based on the symptoms that you are describing it sounds like Cairo is suffering from a bad upper respiratory infection. Viral upper respiratory infections (secondary to herpesvirus, calicivirus, etc) are not uncommon in cats adopted from a shelter. Flare ups of these infections are usually brought on by stressful situations, such as a recent environment change/shelter life, etc. If the infections become serious they often lead to secondary bacterial infections and possibly pneumonia. If it has not been done already I would recommend having chest x-rays to look for evidence of pneumonia. Additionally, I would recommend discussing a different antibiotic with your veterinarian. Convenia, is not routinely used for upper respiratory infections/pneumonia, and could be contributing to the progression of the symptoms. Hope this helps, good luck!

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Silvester. Since he has FIV, the recovery period may take a little longer for this URI. If this was a suspected or confirmed herpes virus infection URI, I would advise using famciclovir if it doesn't start resolving. Famvir is an antiviral and helps to disrupt viral replication, thus directly treating the viral infection if that is the cause. Another thing I would try is humidified air treatments. Turn on a hot shower in a bathroom and let the room fill with the steam. Place Silvester in there for 10-15 minute treatments. This will help to hydrate his respiratory system. Sounds like everything else you are doing is exactly what I would recommend. I definitely prefer Doxy especially in these stubborn URI cases. You may also consult your vet about using some type of saline nasal drops also. Good luck with Silvester. I hope he gets over this soon. Another thing I always try to address is the intestinal parasite issue because intestinal parasites will affect the nutritional status of the pet, which will ultimately affect their overall health and their ability to fight off disease.

If the Vet suspected a URI they are usually viral in nature and the antibiotics are used to prevent secondary bacterial infections. I wouldn't expect a viral infection to resolve in 12 hours sadly. If Turbo still has a fever he may benefit from being hospitalized on IV fluids. If they didn't run blood work I would request full blood work including urine and Feline leukemia and FIV testing (even if previously tested as a kitten). If Turbo hasn't developed any signs of a URI he needs a work up for a fever of unknown origin, which requires blood work, feline retroviral testing, X-rays and possibly an ultrasound. These tests are trying to find a cause for the fever (infection, inflammation, cancer). I am hoping it is just viral and he needs more time. But sometimes that time needs to be spent in the hospital on fluids. I hope this helps and I wish Turbo a speedy recovery!

It may take 7-10 days for the condition to resolve. As long as he is still eating, breathing normal, and has normal energy then continue the medications as directed and monitor his condition. If he has a viral infection then it will need to just run it's course as the antibiotics will only treat a bacterial infection. If he stops eating, becomes lethargic, or has any breathing issues then he should be rechecked by a vet.

Poor girl. Her current temperature is normal so that is good. I would suggest going back to the vet for another type of antibiotic. It seems the current one is not doing the trick, so another class of antibiotic may be all she needs to get this to clear up. I typically like to use Azithromycin in cats with upper respiratory disease because it is highly effective. You should also get Zazu on an anti-viral supplement daily to help boost her immune system. Look for Lysine powder from your local pet store and this should help her immunity and help prevent flare ups in the future, since most URI's are viral related in cats.
