My cat's spider bite wound is burning. What can I put on it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This may still be normal after a spider bite. However, something like an abscess or a growth cannot be ruled out just by looking at it. I would recommend you continue the course. However, if this gets worse such as getting larger, I recommend you consider having it sampled to make sure he is not developing anything else. Hi. Poor Smokey. Unfortunately for a lesion like that, and progressing, there is no home treatment you can do. It may even progress to the point of affecting how he feels and internal functions. He needs professional treatment by a trained veterinarian. He will most likely need medications prescribed by your veterinarian. Good luck

Puncture wounds especially from bites push surface bacteria and oral pathogens from the biter deep into the skin and underlying area called the subcutaneous space. There the bacteria multiple and can travel along tissue planes. I would advise you taking Mano to your veterinarian and let them evaluate the significance of the bite. Your vet will advise a treatment course including antibiotics, possible surgery to place a drain, a rabies shot if deemed needed, medicine for pain, etc. The only thing you can do at home is to apply hydrogen peroxide making sure the eyes are covered and protected. Warm compresses on the area multiple times over the next few days. I'm not familiar with Cicatrin powder but it appears to be antimicrobial in nature. This powder will only treat the very surface of the wounds and may not get down into the deeper layers but I guess it's ok to continue using it. Only use hydrogen peroxide once to cleanse the wounds. If you can get some chlorhexidine solution, you could use that daily to clean the wounds. Good luck with Mano.

That is a pretty large wound! That being said though, it looks like it is healing fine. It does not appear swollen or to have discharge coming from it. The tissue looks healthy. Having it stitched when it first happened which would have allowed it to heal faster. I am not sure how long it's been but a wound that size would take weeks to heal without stitches. If I were you I would keep applying a topical antibiotic cream and just leave it be. Stop using the Betadine. If he is licking it you must stop that behavior by using an Elizabethan collar (cone). As long as he keeps licking it will not heal. If you want it to heal faster you need to take him to a vet to have it stitched. Hope this helps. Best wishes!

Hi, and thanks for your question. This presentation could be due to a trauma (bite wound, or a burn) or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any). I'm glad Charlie is eating and otherwise fine. I recommend using a hot compress on the draining area and the smaller bite, and it's ok to use over his eye also to remove the discharge. That will keep it clean and draining and will bring in the blood supply to help the area heal faster. Continue the antibiotics as directed and you can apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the open area, not too close to the eye though. That will protect it from dirt and further infection. Spider bites can take a long time to heal. Having clear to slightly bloody drainage is normal and nothing to be overly concerned about. Should the wounds look worse or if Charlie stops eating then I would certainly run him in for a recheck exam. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'd call your Vet tomorrow and ask if they have the injectable antibiotic called convenia. I think that will solve you having to medicate Cinco. But yes the ointment baneocin should be ok, just prevent him from licking it. It may not be enough, especially if your Vet felt he needed to be on oral antibiotics. Good luck!
