My indoor cat has soft stools. Should I be concerned about his health?

My young male cat was bitten by a large poisonous snake; thanks to immediate care, he survived with no obvious results, but since this fellow is so playful, I was afraid of a repeat and made him an inside cat. I have noticed that his stools are not firm like my other cats. It’s an inconvenience, but not a problem. Is this something I should worry about?

Im so glad Porgy did well after the snake bite! How scary. As far as the softer stools you're noticing now that he is using a litterbox indoors- soft stool can be caused by intestinal parasites (which he could have picked up from hunting or from fleas when he was outside), a sensitivity to something in his diet, and even more chronic conditions like inflammatory bowel disease. I would start by dropping a stool sample off with your veterinarian and/or asking for a dewormer. You could also feed him a very bland diet for a few days (like chicken or turkey human baby food, Gerber and beachnut are common brands) and see if that helps solidify the stools. If the soft stool persists then I would have him seen by his veterinary office. Hope this helps a little!

The soft stools could be cause by trauma from the fall, a parasite, or an infection. The best thing would be to have a vet examine him to see if he has any injuries from the fall. If you can't get him to a vet and he is otherwise acting normal then you could deworm him with a broad spectrum dewormer, feed him a bland gastrointestinal diet, and add a probiotic to his food and see if that helps clear up the soft stools.

Hello Sometimes a food intolerance and/or allergy can cause loose/soft stools as well as various intestinal diseases that interfere with food absorption (less common though in cats Colby's age). There are various diets available for cats with food allergies/intolerance, some OTC and some require a vet to prescribe. You can ask your veterinarian if given Colby's medical history if they would recommend changing his food and, if so, what diet they recommend. If possible having a list of all prior diets is helpful.

My new kitten has soft stools. Should I be concerned about her health?

Congrats on your new kitten! Since Stella was on Hill's before, it's not likely the cause of her soft stools. Intestinal parasites are common in young kittens, and that could be a cause of her soft stool. Check with the shelter to see if she has recently received a deworming treatment, and if she has not, I would give her one. If she is up to date on her deworming treatments, keep an eye on her stools and if they become diarrhea, have her seen by a vet. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

If Simba is having no other symptoms other than soft stool you may want to consider adding fiber to his diet. There are some commercial diets that have increased fiber content (senior diets are typically higher in fiber). Another option would be to simply add a tablespoon of fiber powder (like Metamucil) to his food once a day. If this does not help then you may want to consider bringing a stool sample to your vet to be checked to ensure nothing else is going on. I hope this helps. Another possibility is that he is dragging his bum due to anal gland discomfort. If his stools are appearing softer in the litter box, the underlying cause could be from a recent diet change, bacterial infection, parasites, or food allergies. The best first step is to visit the veterinarian, who can test a stool sample for parasites, and suggest the best diet option. Often a diet for sensitive stomachs is the first recommendation. Why is my cat's poop liquidy and what should I do to help him?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Smokey. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian as soft stool is not normal in a kitten. The vast majority of these cases are due to an intestinal infection or a diet sensitivity. His veterinarian will likely perform fecal testing. Deworming medication or an antibiotic may be necessary. If this does not help, then a diet change could be needed. A high quantity kitten food is needed though. Royal Canin, Purina ProPlan and Hills Science Diet are all good options. What causes soft cat poop for 2 days if my cat seems healthy?

Fox is probably suffering from a gastrointestinal infection, he might have eaten something that is causing this, i would recommend putting him on a bland diet - boiled chicken and rice for a couple days and see if it makes any difference for the better, if it doesn't you should take him to the vet in order to get treated.
