My cat has a sudden, soft, painless lump under her chin. What is it?

That can indicate an infection or a dental problem. Other possibilities include a cyst, an abscess, a lipoma, or a benign growth. This could be a few different things. It may be a cyst or it could be a growth that is concerning. Without actually seeing the growth I can't really tell you exactly what it is. I always recommend taking an animal to the veterinarian that has a growth to have an aspirate performed. This may give an answer as to what exactly the growth is. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Possible causes for the mass could be an inflamed lymph node, an abscess (ball of pus after a bite from another cat), tooth root abscess, and very unlikely- a cancerous mass. I recommend having it checked out as soon as you can, as it is most likely infection that will require treatment. Your vet will likely have a feel and determine exactly where it is, and might either do a "Fine Needle Aspiration" where they take a small sample and see what cells are inside it, or they might lance and drain it. It could be an area swollen from her hitting her chin on something or it could be an infection / pimple (acne). I recommend that you have Jeri evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. If an abscess was noted, further local therapy with drainage and antibiotics would be recommended.
