Why is my cat sneezing, coughing, and shaking after neuter surgery?

It depends on how long ago the surgery was. Typically a cough just after anesthesia can be associated with irritation to the trachea from the tracheal tube. Coughing several days after could be associated with aspiration pneumonia, or an upper respiratory virus. Also other causes such as heartworm disease, parasites, and asthma can also cause cough. If it has been going on for longer than 2-3 days after surgery or if he is acting sick at all then he should be seen by a veterinarian soon. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

More then likely she is having a flare up of an upper respiratory virus with the stress of surgery. Most cats are exposed to these viruses, such as cat herpes, and stress can elicit a flare up. Sneezing, runny eyes/nose, congestion, etc. are common. If there is any discoloration to any discharge, cough, or she is not eating well a recheck with your vet is indicated. Poor William. He has gone through quite a lot and his immune system must be run down, so he has probably picked up a virus. I would not worry too much at this stage, maybe when your vet opens give them a ring give them an update and ask them what they suggest you feed him.He is already on medications so those will help bacteria at bay, it is important that he starts eating perhaps you could offer something bland but equally quite strong smelling such as boiled white fish or tuna in water. Oh my. THese are symptoms of a severe respiratory infection. After surgery, some pets immune system will decrease, making them more susceptible to getting bacterial infections. Also while at the hospital he may have been exposed to another sick pet, especially if Kovu is not fully vaccinated. He really needs to see a vet as soon as possible. I would recommend taking him in to your local vet as soon as they open in the morning. In the meantime you may be able to get a pediatric syringe and clear out his airway. Also you can use a humidifer or place him in the bathroom with a hot shower running for 15 minutes twice daily to help break up any mucous and help clear up his airway a bit for tonight until you can get him seen! Hi and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry that Miso is not feeling well. From the medications that Miso has been put on it sounds like your veterinarian may suspect Miso may have a virus causing the upper airway congestion, we sometimes use Lysine to help with viral upper airway congestion. The Herpes virus (along with some other viruses) causes chronic upper airway congestion. This can cause watery eyes (not always), sneezing and nasal discharge (not always)-recurs with stress. It can have a secondary bacterial component to it that responds to an antibiotic like Clavamox. Or this can be just a bacterial upper respiratory infection that is not responding well to the antibiotic of choice. Clavamox is typically an antibiotic that does well with upper respiratory infections. My biggest concern with your note is the looking bloated. I would have Miso evaluated by your veterinarian for looking bloated and discuss an alternate antibiotic, an antihistamine or I will even sometimes use saline nasal drops with a humidifier to help with moisturizing the airways. Is he still on the antibiotics? If so maybe you could call and request a different medication? If he is no longer taking the medication and he is still vomiting then she should have a follow up appointment. It is possible that it is just coincidental with the neutering and he could have a foreign body in his stomach, or a parasite causing him to vomit. The sneezing is most likely from being exposed to viruses is the air at the veterinary clinic. This is like kids going to school and getting sick from being around lots of different children. The vaccinations protect against upper respiratory infections but they can still get a mild case. Mr. Kitty should rest and he'll be fine in a few days to a week.
