My new 10-month-old cat sleeps too much. Is it a health issue?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 8 days old | 11.0231 lbs

Leo (male cat) is sleeping more than 20 hrs. I mean he is hardly couple of hours awake. Is it normal or something may be wrong? Its been a week since he has come to new home and new family. He is 10 months now. We try to play a lot with him but he is just not interested.

Hello, that is a lot of sleeping! Sleeping all day is pretty normal for an older adult cat, but I would not consider it normal for a young cat like Leo - a 10 month old kitten should be active and playful. Since Leo is new to you and you're just getting to know each other, it's possible he's just a lazier kitty - but I would recommend having him checked out by a vet to make sure there isn't a health issue that needs to be addressed. If he were my patient, I would recommend running bloodwork, including a FELV/FIV test, to screen for any illnesses. If bloodwork was normal and he is eating & drinking well, then I'd reluctantly conclude he may just be a lazy cat....but, again, it's worth having him seen, if you aren't seeing the normal activity and playfulness that kittens usually have! My 2-month-old kitten is sleeping all day and not playing. Is he sick?

Lethargy is a non specific sign and can be related to a variety of health problems. Given his young age could be quite concerning but at the same time he is eating fine and the body temperature is normal. Sometimes they can feel under the weather for a little trauma, because they feel pain somewhere, for a gastrointestinal problem (check for any vomiting or diarrhea). I would monitor Bruno for the next few hours but if he is not improving or any other symptom appears, I would suggest to bring him to the vet for an health check. Good luck! Certainly as cats age - and at 10 years old Jack is considered a "senior" cat - they start to sleep more. However, cats often give us almost no real signs that they are experiencing illness other than an increase in the amount of time they are asleep. So it's easy to write off what is truly "lethargy" as just more sleeping. It may sound like an unimportant distinction, but in a species that is so difficult to interpret, I'd always default to getting a checkup before just assuming that this is a normal change associated with aging.

I am worried that Cube might be sick. Kittens normally are quite playful, so a kitten who just eats and sleeps without periods of high energy play and curiosity is not normal. Please take him to the vet for an exam. The vet will probably recommend some blood tests, and may also recommend a stool sample. It could be that he was born with some sort of internal defect such as a heart malformation that makes him not able to have periods of sustained play. Please have him seen by a vet ASAP.
