My 2-year-old cat is skinny and has liquid diarrhea. What's wrong?

If this was caused by a food change I would expect him to be back to normal by now. There may be something else underlying going on here that is the cause of Zebco's diarrhea and weight loss, such as intestinal parasites, pancreatic disease, diabetes, or even thyroid disease. I would recommend taking him to your vet for a through examination and potential tests (bloodwork, fecal exam), to hopefully identify the underlying problem so that he is treated appropriately. In the meantime I would suggest feeding Zebco a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help settle his stomach a bit. You can also try adding 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in his food daily to add fiber and help harden the stools up. Best wishes with Zebco and I hope he feels better soon.

I definitely think you should have Dahlia examined by your veterinarian. A few diseases that could cause an increased appetite with weight loss include intestinal parasites, diabetes, and hyperthyroidism. Your vet can examine Dahlia and her stool, and may recommend checking lab work if parasites seem unlikely. All of these diseases are very treatable, but it's important to get a diagnosis quickly.

Weight loss and diarrhea are concerning for either a gut disease (allergies, dietary indiscretion, toxin, IBD, etc.), or other severe systemic disease (kidney disease, liver disease, etc), however systemic disease sounds less likely. She likely has eaten something that has upset her stomach. I would recommend getting her to a vet when you first can, and in the mean-time I would get her a high quality canned cat food. You want one that is low in fat and high in fibre. The canned food is better to help keep Bibi hydrated. If Bibi won't eat, you can try syringe feeding her. The watery eyes can be signs of a virus or infection, hard to tell without seeing her, however I would address her weight loss and diarrhea first. You can try boiling rice and feeding tuna with rice as well. Best of luck with Bibi, I hope she feels better soon!

Sometimes cats don’t eat well when they are out of their element. Also, stress can cause diarrhea. If the diarrhea lasts longer than 24 hours, I would recommend taking her to a vet to make sure nothing else is going on, like intestinal parasites or a bacterial infection. Weight loss in a cat can be caused by several different things. In a young kitten I would be mostly concerned with intestinal parasites. If Dory is young I would recommend taking a fecal sample in to your vet to be assessed for parasites. A simple course of deworming should take care of the problem. If Dory is an older cat I would be concerned with either diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and/or kidney disease. Your vet can run blood tests to rule out these diseases. Some additional things that would be helpful to know are Dory's age, whether or not she is eating, and if she is vomiting and/or having diarrhea. I hope this helps. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. They probably got it from the mother. I recommend that you have them evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Oscar may need fecal samples and cultures or other testing sent to an outside lab if that hasn't already been done. Some kittens benefit from prescription diets to help with diarrhea and a probiotic such as Forti Flora may help. Oscar is a cutie. I hope he is feeling better soon.
