What's this lump on my cat's skin? Is it a wart or something serious?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 10 years and 11 months old

My cat has a large lump under his fur and a pinkish wart looking small bump protruding from his skin. He is about 9 years old and a bit over weight.

The pink raised mass in the picture appears to be a wart. I would not be concerned about this unless it grows or changes in color. The lump you feel could range from a cyst to a cancerous growth. I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian for an aspirate. This is where they can take cells from the mass and look at it with microscope

It would be best if you had this mass examined by a veterinarian, as this could be just a wart but also a malignant growth. Since it is growing, it is suspicious. The vet may want to remove it surgically and send it in rather than do a biopsy as it is still small.

To me it looks like a wart that is typical in old cats. If it has been there for a good while and hasn't changed much, I would get it checked the net time your cat goes to see your vet for an annual exam. If it came up suddenly or have changed significantly recently then I would get it checked as soon as possible. Sudden changes in growths is concerning because they can indicate malignancy. A wart is nothing to worry about unless she scratches it and injures herself or it gets infected. Something more serious should be evaluated and potentially removed before they spread.

It's hard to tell the size but it looks like it may be a benign wart or growth. It appears to be more on the surface of the skin which is good, and it is well defined. Cats do get malignant skin growths so it is a good idea to have your veterinarian examine it and feel underneath also. They can easily remove this if necessary and do a biopsy. This may be an abscess, a cyst or a tumor. You should have it examined by your veterinarian, as it is not possible to distinguish these by just looking at a photo. An abscess can usually be treated with antibiotics and/or be lanced, and a cyst can be evacuated. To identify a tumor, your vet may want to do a fine needle aspirate (he takes some material from the bump with a needle and then looks at it under the microscope) to determine whether the mass is concerning.

To do this, the vet sticks a small needle into the lump to get a sample of it's cells, and examines the cells on a slide under a microscope. It's usually painless to the animal, and relatively quick to perform. I would have Lemon seen by a vet in the morning to have this lump examined and diagnosed so it can be treated as needed.
