My cat's sick after steroid injection for skin. Is this normal?

There are different types of steroid shots. Long term use or high doses can affect their liver or kidneys. There has been studies that some forms can bring on a form of heart failure if already underlying with it. The do make asthma inhalers for cats that may be easier to give. If she is not eating I would have her rechecked to have blood work done and see what else is going on

I am sorry to hear about Sushi! I would recommend following up with her veterinarian. I would be concerned she could have allergies to airborne allergens (called atopic dermatitis) which responded to the steroids, but the steroids do not get rid of the allergies, just help relieve the symptoms, so often a pet may need to be put on other medications long term to keep the allergies under control. It is possible this is secondary to the steroid injection, and if so, dependent on the type of steroid given, it could take several weeks for the drug to be eliminated from the body. This behavior may also be her way of saying she doesn't feel good. But if everything else is normal (eating normally, breathing normally, etc.) that is good. You can try to figure out if there any specific behaviors towards her that elicit the response. And unfortunately it is sometimes just the cat but this seems less likely given what you report. I would definitely contact your vet and let them know what you are seeing at home so you can find out what drug was given to know better the duration of effect. First of all this is a steroid, and i do not understand why it was given to prevent an infection (steroid do the opposite). secondly steroids are usually not recommended for cats with heart problems, as it can cause heart failure (usually only in prolonged treatment though).

She will likely still be uncomfortable but should be greatly improved over how she felt before the anal glands were treated. The steroid injection can cause them to act very hungry and thirsty all the time, but you don't need to feed her more than before. If she does eat and drink more, expect more output in the litter box. Any of the injection sites may be sore for a day or so afterward but no longer than that. If you notice any lameness or swelling in those areas, or if she loses her appetite, has vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy or weakness, she'll need to be seen again by your veterinarian right away.

Hello. I am sorry Simba is not feeling well. It is possible that Simba was incubating, or had a low-grade infection. The allergy shot was actually a steroid injection that lowers the ability of the immune system to respond to an infection, essentially making the infection worse. So, this is not a behavior change, Simba just is under the weather. Hopefully, the antibiotics will keep things from getting worse, but if Simba does not pick up in a couple of days, please call your veterinarian. He may need a change in antibiotics, or be placed on an antiviral medication. As long as he is eating a little each day, he will be OK, but if he refuses all food, have him seen as soon as possible. It's very likely she is having a bad reaction to the steroids that affects her breathing negatively, you need to give it a little more time, within 24-48 hours you should start seeing an improvement.
