Why is my cat shaking his head with a runny nose and ear hematoma?

The picture is a little fuzzy on my end, but the ear itself looks a little puffy. If Arnold shook his head/ears so much he may have busted a small blood vessel in the ear and there could be blood trapped under the skin (called an aural hematoma). These can be very painful and often need treatment. Ear mites and ear infections are common causes of head-shaking like this. I would recommend that Arnold see a vet to diagnose the cause of the head-shaking and to see if there is a hematoma that also needs treatment.

This could be caused by an ear infection, fleas, drug reaction (if she is currently taking medications), or a brain issue (trauma, infection). More than likely, if he is up to date with his real treatments, this will be due to an ear infection. I would take Theodore into the vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing the head bob and treat accordingly. I would take him into the vet first thing in the morning.

If Theo is acting as normal and the swollen area is not bothering him at all, you should monitor him at home. The hematoma should disappear in the next 5-7 days. However, if the lump gets bigger or becomes painful, you should take Theo to your local vets for an appointment.

Poor baby. He could be suffering from allergies or a upper respiratory infection (URI). He could also have an ear infection or ear mites. You can try Benadryl to see if that helps. See link below. If he isn’t improving, I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to determine if there is any type of infection or mites in his ears and get him started on the proper ear meds. Ear tumors can certainly lead to chronic upper airway infections in cats, so my guess would be this is caused by the ear tumors, especially if they are polyps because the infiltrate the nasal passage. Poor guy. I would get him on another round of antibiotics soon to help clear up his infection. I would also recommend some bloodwork to ensure his internal organs are healthy as well. Ear mites are also possible. Polyps can lead to ear infections are usually removed surgically. In order to diagnose an ear infection, ear mites or a polyp she needs to be examined by a Vet. They will provide ear cleaner and ear drops and if she has a polyp they can discuss surgical options. I hope this helps and I wish Rey the very best!

I'm so sorry to hear about Voldemort. Although I can't be sure, one thing that may be going on is called an oral hematoma. Unfortuantely, there isn't anything for you to do at home tonight. The hemotoma is likely more annoying than anything (especially for a young dog). The only suggestion you might try at home would be to place a light bandage (like a large headband) just to keep the ear from flapping around. Make sure it isn't too tight.
