Why does my cat scratch and meow at my door at night? Is it anxiety?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Female | spayed | 1 year and 3 months old | 5 lbs

My cat is relentlessly scratching and meowing at my door at night (she doesn’t do it to any other doors). She has plenty of food, water and toys. It doesn’t matter how much time I spend with her before bed time. I’ve tried putting up baby gates but she just jumps over them. I’ve tried simply ignoring it. I’ve tried spray bottles. Is this separation anxiety? Does she need medication?

This may be separation anxiety you are seeing in Weasley. I recommend getting a Feliway diffuser to help reduce some anxiety. You may also want to meal feed Weasley and use an automatic feeder with a timer that goes off around the time you go to bed. Setting her feeding schedule around her "alone time" may serve as a distraction.

If there is no improvement you should consider scheduling an appointment for Weasley with a veterinarian to discuss medication options.
