My outdoor cat keeps scratching his head and neck; why won't it heal?

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. What you can do in the meantime is use an e-collar to prevent further self-injury. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

She does have a very large open wound that does require therapy and warrants veterinary evaluation as soon as possible. From the picture I can only say this may be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria or fungal). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics or antifungal meds (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. More investigations like sampling and bacterial swabs would be needed to determine the underlying cause more specifically. In my experience I have seen large wounds like this one from Poxvirus infection (but usually other wounds are present as well). I would suggest to handle this wound always with gloves (you are doing it anyway as I can see from the pic). Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking. Skin lesions like you are describing can have a variety of causes, including skin parasites (fleas or mites), an infection (bacterial or fungal), allergies, or another underlying medical issue. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his skin lesions, so he could start any treatment (antibiotics, anti-itch medications, parasiticide) that he may need. In the meantime, I would clean the area will diluted betadine if possible and then keep it dry, and trim his nails back as much as possible to keep him from scratching at it. Good luck!

Judging from the picture, this could be a ruptured abscess or secondary to self trauma from him scratching at the area. I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate treatment recommendations can be made. He will need the hair clipped from around the wound and the wound cleaned. Hello. Scratching to this degree could still be the result of some sensitivity, to fleas, pollens or other environmental stimulants. Very few cats will scratch because of a food sensitivity. Most of these cats will vomit or have diarrhea. It is possible that fleas may be the cause, so even though you may not see any fleas on her, you should use a good flea product on a regular basis, even if Maarten is strictly indoors. You might want to have your veterinarian examine her to rule out a parasitic issue, infection, the presence of ear mites, & possibly try a short course of steroids to see if this allows the lesions to heal. Hello. I'm sorry to hear that Rey is not doing well. It looks like he has a bacterial infection secondary to fleas or allergies, this will cause them to scratch excessively and then it can become infected which looks like it is now. He does need to see a vet to be able to start on some antibiotics. If you have financial concerns I would check with your shelter or local organizations to see if there someone can help. I would also try and keep him from scratching it if you can but I would not use the knee brace because that could actually cause more harm than good.
