My cat has a scabbing head sore. When should I take her to the vet?

My cat has a sore at the side of her head which she has scratched a few times but it is scabbing over now. Do you think she needs to go to a vet or will they just say let it heal.

If it's scabbing over, I'd let it be but if Tink keeps scratching at it, then take her into the vet. Also take her into the vet if it appears infected. Signs of infection include redness, swelling, pus, and the area being warm to the touch. I hope this helps!

These look like they are from scratches or a mild skin infection. It's fine to wait a few days to see if they start to get better before taking him in. I recommend cleaning these with hydrogen peroxide then apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on them. They make take a week or two to heal. If they get worse or if Cheese stops eating or the sores become painful then I would take him in for an exam and treatment. The veterinarian will probably clean them, maybe do a skin scraping, and will probably give him antibiotics and a topical ointment. Regardless this looks like it should heal quickly. Poor cat. This looks wide enough where it should at the very least get a topical treatment. You can try an over the counter antibitoic ointment or spray from your local pet store. Ask a store representative as to what is available in your area. You should also clean this area with Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water to help keep bacteria and infection at bay. If it doesn't seem to be healing well in the next few days, then a vet visit is warranted at that point. I hope that this heals up well soon! Best of luck moving forward. Take care. : )

My cat has a scabbing scratch on her forehead. Vet or home care?

It's hard to say without a picture or examining Pippa. I would say use your best judgement. An allergy wouldn't present as a scratch. If it doesn't appear to heal in a few days, or if additional symptoms develop, she should definitely get checked out by the vet. Don't pick the scab off. Be careful not to get any antiseptic cleaners in the eye.

This scab could be due to a mild infection or perhaps some mild traumatic lesion. You can consider just monitoring for now if it is just one. If this gets worse or just does not resolve, have her evaluated by your veterinarian then. I would not recommend any products or treatments yet as this may resolve on its own depending on its severity. Good luck and have a great day!

My cat has a large scab on her back, but seems fine. Is it serious?

It could be that Ruby sustained a wound from trauma that has caused the scab, and I would monitor it for now for signs of infection. These signs include redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, and puss. Should any of those signs be seen, I would take Ruby into the vet for antibiotics. I would not put any topical treatment on it. Although quite safe on superficial wounds, cats groom and ingest most of the topical ointment you apply and therefore should be used only under direct veterinary supervision and if there are no other appropriate options. Many human ointments contain multiple other ingredients which are not necessarily safe to be swallowed. Hopefully, it should heal just fine on it's own.

My cat has a brown-red scab with pink edges. Is it an infection?

Ouch, poor Jingles! It looks like he could have injured himself leading to the scab. I am concerned about the redness surrounding the sea, as that can indicate infection. I would have him seen by a vet on Monday for this scab. If he does have an infection, he will need antibiotics to treat it. I hope it helps!

Hello from across the pond! I would try and keep it clean by washing the lesion with a mild soap and water. Nothing else to keep from irritating the wound further. From the pictures you posted, it does look like there is a bit of yellow discharge coming from the wound indicating an infection. You vet may prescribe antibiotics when you see him/her soon.

My cat keeps picking her wound scab. When should I see the vet?

Certainly a buster collar would avoid further scratching and an antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) will avoid any risk of infection. Even though a picture of the wound would help to determine the most appropriate underlying treatment more specifically, I think in this case a vet check up would be ideal.
