My cat is in pain. What over-the-counter meds are safe for cats?

I am sorry to hear about Eddie! Unfortunately there are not any safe pain medications available over the counter for cats. I would recommend getting Eddie to a veterinarian for an exam and pain medication (antibiotics may also be needed if bite wounds are present). Cats are very sensitive to drugs and there are only a few prescription pain medications available that are considered safe (these include buprenorphine and Onsior).

Hi there. Sorry this happened to Oliver. I really think you need to get him to a vet ASAP. If he is in pain, crying when touched and not walking much on his hindquarters then he needs some pain medication at the very least. He may also need antibiotics if there is wound present you can't see. It is very common for cats, when they get into fights, to have wounds that don't show up until a day or two later when they turn into abscesses. Please do NOT give Willy any more children's tylenol! It is extremely toxic to cats, and can be fatal if given. You will need to watch him for signs of tylenol toxicity, which includes brown colored gums, labored breathing, swollen face and neck, vomiting, low body temperature, jaundice, and coma. If you see any of those signs, Willy has to see a vet immediately, as it is a medical emergency and it fatal without treatment. There are no safe OTC pain relievers you can give him, as many are toxic to cats and are fatal if given. He has to see a vet as soon as possible for his tooth pain, and I can give you some resources that may help you afford a vet. I am so sorry Mazzy isn't feeling well. There is nothing over the counter that you can give her- she is too small and nothing is safe for cats. There is also limited medications in veterinary medicine for cats. I would recommend keeping her confined with her litter box and food in a small crate or bathroom, so she doesn't re-injure herself. She does need to see a vet to rule out a fracture or dislocation. They will be able to prescribe something safe for pain for her. Good luck and kisses to Mazzy!

No, Ibuprofen and Tylenol can be toxic to cats. If she seems to be in a lot of pain and your vet can’t see her then you will need to take her to an emergency clinic for treatment. Sorry that she is in pain.

Poor Mavis! No, do NOT give aspirin or any other human over-the-counter pain medications, as these are extremely toxic in cats. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can get over the counter that would be safe to give her. If she's holding up the leg completely and/or seems really painful on it, then I would recommend having her seen tonight at an emergency clinic for an exam and possibly x-rays. If this isn't possible, then I would take her to your regular vet tomorrow morning to be seen if she's still limping.

Unfortunately we cannot, by law, recommend that you give any medication to poor Oliver that was not personally prescribed by your own veterinarian. Even with that said, Gabapentin is rarely used in cats because we don't have enough clinical evidence to support using it safely in them for analgesic (pain management) purposes. It sounds like Oliver may have suffered a concussion or even has a musculoskeletal injury around his neck area. You can apply a cold compress on the neck area for 5-10 minutes to help with any suspected swelling for now, and then I recommend getting him seen in the morning by your local vet. Your regular vet may not be open on the weekend; however, there are usually some clinics open (like VCA or Banfield) that can help Oliver get examined, tested for internal injury, and treated appropriately with safe medication specific to his particular injury.
