My cat has a red, scabby belly rash. Could it be new food or litter?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 8 years and 4 months old | 8 lbs

Good morning, I have an 8 year old domestic short haired cat. He's a desexed male and strictly indoor only. He has a rash on his belly, just a small amount that's got red scabby lumps. He doesn't have fleas, I checked him all over. I also have 2 other indoor cats and neither of them are showing any signs of rashes and hair loss. I have recently changed his food from black hawk to pro plan and also his kitty litter. I was wondering whether it could be a food allergy or the litter? thank you

In an older pet who is just now experiencing allergy type symptoms, I would definitely suspect that it could be either the new litter, new food or a combination of both that is causing this. I would start with changing the litter back to the normal litter that you used to use. As for the skin, you can try bathing Billy in a hypoallergenic shampoo (Duoxo calm shampoo) or oatmeal based shampoo. However, Billy may need a steroid shot by your vet to calm things down.
If the change in litter doesn't cause resolution of the skin, then I would suggest changing the food back. I hope you can get Billy's skin back to normal soon!
