Rectal prolapse cannot usually be treated successfully at home. This is often always a surgical problem. The underlying cause of the prolapse has to be addressed.

Until you can get Princess to the vet you can try using a sugar water paste. Mix regular table sugar with water until it is the consistency of a paste. Apply a small amount to the prolapsed tissue 3 or 4 times per day. She will need to wear a cone collar to prevent her from licking the tissue and the paste.

Oh dear, poor Bossy! I can see the red tissue, but cannot tell from the picture if it appears more consistent with a rectal prolapse, uterine prolapse or ruptured anal glands. Ideally, this situation should be addressed immediately, but if you need to wait until the morning, be sure that Bossy is not licking the prolapsed tissue by putting an e-collar (cone) on her. If you do not have one at home, this link has tips for making one at home: http://dogsaholic.com/care/homemade-dog-cone.html. You can keep the tissue moistened with a water-based lubricant. Take her to the vet as soon as possible in the morning. I hope that all goes well!

If your cat has a prolapsed rectum it needs to be reinserted. If you do this at home it will likely come right back out. Typically these need to be reinserted under anesthesia and a purse string suture placed around the rectum to keep it in. I'm so sorry to hear that Oliver is having this problem. A prolapsed rectum is very painful and the longer that tissue stays out the higher the chance that it will lose blood supply and need surgery. Prolapsed rectums in kittens are usually caused by excessive straining from diarrhea, constipation, or GI parasites. Unfortunately, there is no home remedy and I can only recommend that you have Oliver seen right away to correct this problem and find the underlying cause.

No, usually these need to be replaced surgically and sutured back into place. I'm sorry but some things you cannot correct from home. I suggest you get him to a vet. Also, usually there is some underlying condition that has caused the prolapse that also needs to be addressed.

Poor Roe! I agree, the pictures do look consistent with a rectal prolapse. If at all possible, try to find an emergency vet or a vet on call for after hours emergencies in your area for more urgent care, as it sounds as though Roe is uncomfortable based on his behavior. If there are vets available in your area, you can try to put an e-collar (cone) on Roe until you can get to the vet in the morning. This will prevent him from licking or chewing any prolapsed tissue, as this would make matters worse. You can also apply some water based lubricants (such as KY jelly) to the prolapsed tissue to prevent it from drying out. I hope that all goes well.

How to help a dog with a rectal prolapse and straining to poop?

I can’t really tell from the photo but it looks like a possible rectal prolapse. I suggest you deworm this dog and use granulated sugar on the prolapsed tissue. That should shrink it so it goes back in. This happens from straining to defecate so feed soft foods that are easy to digest. You can use amoxicillin if you have it. Be advised sometimes surgery is needed to fix this. My cat has diarrhea, swollen nipples, and a red area when pooping.

I would recommend that you have Princess seen by your veterinarian. A rectal prolapse may need surgical correction and will get worse with time, if left untreated. Diarrhea can exacerbate a prolapse. An infection with a parasite called coccidia can cause diarrhea and causes enough irritation in some pets to cause a prolapse. Your veterinarian may recommend checking a stool sample to see if this is part of the problem. I would also recommend that you have Princess spayed to prevent future litters of kittens. Unspayed female cats are at higher risk for developing mammary cancer later in life and uterine infections.
