Cat tapeworms gone after Profender? How to stop persistent diarrhea?

I recommend that you have Dusty evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. You are not giving the correct medication. If you are seeing tapeworms, small flat worms or rice like segments near the anus, then you need a prescription dewormer from your veterinarian. I recommend taking a fecal sample in and have them look for parasite eggs under the microscope. Then they can make sure they give you the proper medication. The reason is most of the time, it is needed to follow up on the initial deworming dose to be actually effective for most parasites. Good luck and have a great day!

Hello. Once the tapeworm has been killed by the wormer, the parasite is often digested ( it exerts a protective coating while alive ), & we usually do not see tapeworms passed in the stool. If it was a particularly heavy infestation, you may see some pass out, but this is not the norm. Any signs of tape segments should also disappear shortly. I like Profender, it is a good product, but I would follow label directions & reapply when recommended. Otherwise, once it wears off, your cat can pick up more tapeworms from hunting & from fleas ( make sure you are using a good flea preventative, too ). Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Razor! Intestinal parasites are very common causes of diarrhea. The tapeworm medications are only specific for tapeworm while most 7-8 week old puppies also have roundworms. Also at almost 8 weeks old Razor should be starting his vaccinations. Parvo is a virus that causes diarrhea and can be life threatening. I would have Razor examined by your Vet and bring a stool sample to be tested for other intestinal parasites. He should be dewormed with a broad spectrum drug that gets more than just tapeworms. Other causes of diarrhea in puppies are: intestinal parasites like roundworms, whip and hook worm, coccidia, and giardia, food allergy/intolerance, dietary indiscretion, viral or bacterial infections and other intestinal diseases. Tapeworms are contracted from fleas so be sure that Razor doesn't have fleas and is on a good flea and tick medication. I hope this helps and I wish you and Razor the very best!

Poor girl. It sounds like she may have a bout of colitis (inflamed colon) which is common following a tapeworm infection. You can try treating her with probiotics, Culturelle over the counter, to see if this clears things up. You can also try adding in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) in her food daily to add fiber and help bulk up her stools. I would also recommend feeding her a bland diet of boiled plain chicken or tuna and white rice for about 7 days, and then slowly transitioning her back to her normal diet. If her diarrhea and straining does not improve within 3-4 days, then its best to take her to your vet who can test her stool and make sure there isn't something else going on. If it is just a bad case of colitis, then a short course of antibiotics will likely resolve things. Best wishes with Stockings and I hope she feels better soon. Take care.

I would recommend giving the food more time to help normalize the stool. You can also add in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora to see if this helps resolve the diarrhea as well. If there is still no improvement going in to next week, then I would contact the veterinarian you saw to discuss further options. I hope this helps!
