My cats pee outside clean litter boxes. How do I retrain them?

Make sure their litter boxes aren't close to their food and water, cats don't like to use the bathroom near their food source. While you are litter training them in your house, don't let them have free rein of the house when you are gone. Place them in a small room with their litter boxes while you are away from the house, and provide them with water and a place to sleep at the opposite end of the room from the boxes. Make sure you clean the litter box daily. If they continue to have problems going to the bathroom outside the litter box, it may be a health issue, and I'd recommend bringing them into your vet for a health check.

Hi, it certainly does not do any harm in reinforcing positively his behaviour. However you need to consider other things, such as how many litter trays you are offering and what size are they. You should have one litter tray for each cat plus one, and they should be large enough to allow your cat to turn and move comfortably. You should not have the litter trays in a position where they feel exposed, as by nature they feel vulnerable when going to the toilet. You should scoop the tray twice a day and deep clean it with a non toxic non scented disinfectant once a week. You should stick with the litter they are used to. I would try a large litter box. Some cats, especially males, need a large space in order to not accidently drip on the outside of the box. You may also try the option of a covered box. Some cats don't like those so I would still leave out the uncovered boxes. You could also get some of the urinary pads like puppy pads or geriatric human bed pads to put under the pans to make clean up easier. Finally, I would make sure you have enough boxes in general. The typical rule of thumb is a litterbox per cat plus one extra. I know with 6 cats, that can be a lot so however many you can put throughout your house, the better. I hope this helps!
