Why is my cat's paw bleeding? What should I do and when to worry?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 10 years old | 17 lbs

This morning my cat’s right paw was bleeding and I don’t seem to understand why. It is possible that my other cat might have scratched him playfully but looking at the paw I am not entirely sure that, that might be the cause. I have asked my vet about the thing growing on one of the pads of the paw and she said it’s similar to a callous so I’m not too concerned with that. But this is the first time I am seeing him bleed from his paw. Can someone explain to me why it might be bleeding.

It could be Yankee hurt himself causing the bleeding. If the bleeding has stopped, keep an eye on it for now. I would gently clean his paw with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it. Best of luck.

He could have an infection from a bite wound. The bite may not be visible unless the leg is shave. The wound may need to be opened, drained, flushed, and treated with antibiotics. Have him examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat the problem.

This appears to be an infected wound. The foot also looks swollen. I suggest you have her examined by your vet as soon as possible. She probably needs some antibiotics for this to clear up. I am very worried that this has been going on so long.....

It sounds like your cat may have an abscess in the swollen leg. I recommend getting him seen by your vet as soon as possible for an exam and treatment. An abscess can form from a single claw mark, which then is invisible since it will close up, trapping bacteria under the skin. Your vet will examine your cat, determine the reason for the swelling and be better able to recommend treatment options from there. Your cat will most likely need antibiotics to help him heal.

If it currently bleeding you can use some corn starch to help slow the bleeding. Also if you are able to place a light bandage on it to prevent him from licking it tonight that would be good. You can also use a cone collar which you can find at your local pet store if it is still open. I would take him to your vet first thing in the morning for an exam. He may need to have it cleaned, medicated and professionally wrapped. Your vet will also be able to provide antibiotics and pain meds if need. Poor Kitty. Try to apply gentle pressure to stop the bleeding. Put an Ecollar on her to keep her from licking it, as that can make it worse. You can make one at home or buy one at a pet store. Having her seen by a vet tomorrow is a good idea.

My 4-week-old kitten has a bleeding paw or injured claw. What to do?

It's hard to tell from the pictures exactly where the wound is and if it involves the claw itself. I would soak her paw in warm water (you can use a little epsom salts if you have it) to loosen the scab, then you can gently clean it with a warm wet washcloth. If you find that there is bleeding, then apply gently pressure for 15 minutes. Don't apply any topical medications as Luna will just lick them off. If the bleeding continues, or of the paw swells, or if there is a creamy or foul discharge, then she may need to go to the vet for examination and antibiotics.

You can try making an Epsom salts soak (directions for dilution with warm water are on the package), which will help to cleanse the toes, and hopefully give Maki some protection against infection - but she might not tolerate it well. You can also purchase an e-collar, which will keep her from licking, as this often causes secondary infection. You can show this to your parents - if the skin is truly peeled back, it's likely that Maki is quite painful (imagine how that would feel) and needs veterinary care in order to protect the area, prevent infection, and treat the pain. You might tell them that dealing with this now, rather than later, may be less expensive, as foot injuries can easily get complicated in cats, since they use a litter box, and infection is common.

My cat's paw prints are bloody, but I don't see an injury. Why?

It is possible that James has a small wound in between his toes or affecting one of his nails. It can sometimes be quite difficult to find a wound due the fur and often uncooperative nature of cats. It is also possible that James had a wound that has since closed, but there is dried blood residue on his fur that becomes more apparent when in the moist environment of the sink. If James begins favoring a paw or licking at a particular area, I would recommend that he is seen by a veterinarian. I would also monitor closely for any signs of other discharge or swelling associated with any of his paws.

Oh goodness, that looks like a deep infection. It could be bacterial or fungal, but I suspect more likely bacterial. He needs to see a veterinarian for an examination and treatment plan. What to do for a stray cat with a bleeding, sore, smelly paw?

You can strongly recommend to the owner that he/she bring the cat to their veterinarian for an exam. That paw looks painful and possibly infected. The cat will need an exam, x-rays (to diagnose fractures), bloodwork, antibiotics and pain management. An e-collar (cone) will prevent licking and chewing. You can't legally do anything since you are not the rightful owner. If you do, you risk litigation if the cat takes a turn for the worse. If there is no owner, contact your local animal control officer or humane society.
