My cat overgrooms and loses fur. How can I get it to grow back?

If there is no medical reason such as fleas or food allergy and it is behavioral there is medication to help. She may notice another animal or cat outside that is new that is stressing her out and causing her to do this more, There may be a new neighbor with a dog that she smells passing by the door increasing her anxiety. You can start with feliway diffusers and sprays to help in side the apartment. You can also talk to your vet about anxiety medication to start her on to decrease this behavior.

Such overgrooming in cats can be related to allergies or anxiety - feeding a calming food such as royal canin calm or adding a claming supplement containing b vitamins, tryptophan and casein can also help. Occasionally antiinflammatory medications may need to be prescribed by your vet in order to break the recurrent itch-scratch/groom cycle and allow the skin to heal

If she’s not responded to those things I recommend an anti inflammatory injection from your veterinarian. That will stop the overgrooming and the fur should start to grow in. Then the diffuser and other things you’ve done should reduce the chances of the overgrooming to recurr after the injection wears off. My first thought on seeing these pictures would be that Chicory has a flea allergy. However if she is on a very good flea control like you mentioned it could be an allergy to something else (like trees, grasses, pollens, dust or even her food). She is losing so much hair because she is over-grooming herself, probably because she is so itchy. The best approach to treating a cat with an allergy is to help stop the itch. This can usually be accomplished with a medication like a steroid or Atopica. Sometimes you will have to change the cat's diet as well. This is usually from overgrooming due to stress. In the photo the skin looks normal and you are correct there isn’t any evidence of fleas. Often this starts with a change in the household from a new pet, new person or moving. You can try using a pheromone diffuser like Feliway to help her relax and there are calming supplements like Solliquin that can reduce her anxiety as well. Make sure she has a quiet, private place so she can escape any commotion in your house. It's a feline pheromone product that helps naturally calm cats. It can come in diffuser, spray, and collar forms. Cats also find great comfort in height. If she doesn't have many high places to perch around the house, that can be something that helps her interact more. Poor Boda! Overgrooming is usually a symptom of allergic skin disease or emotional stress. He may respond quite well to a veterinary prescription allergy diet like Hills z/d and stop overgrooming completely. Some cats need to be on allergy medication like steroids to help with the symptoms. If stress or emotional issues are the culprit, then Boda might need to be on antidepressants or anti anxiety medication designed for cats like Zylkene or Feliway spray. If you want to try something before taking him to the vet, buy some Feliway cat pheromone spray and allergy diet like z/d and try that for 8-10 weeks, as both may work and save you a trip to the vet!
