My cat has an oozing spot near her nipple. What could this be?

Mammary growths in cats have a high chance of being a malignant cancer. Since they are open and draining, they may also be infected It would be best to have a vet check the area to see if surgery is an option to remove them or at least medication to help clean them and clear the infection. Peroxide can actually delay healing after the first use. You are safer with mild soap and water to wipe it clean

Hello, sorry to hear about Diamonds. My biggest suspicion is that she may have a mass below that area which could be cancerous. The best way to know would be to obtain a sample from the mass and look under the microscope for potential malignant cells. Alternatively, this mass could be removed and submitted for biopsy since it is bleeding and likely causing Diamonds some discomfort. I would recommend having you veterinarian assess the mass and decide wether removing or sampling it is the next best step. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Her veterinarian could perform a simple procedure known as a fine needle aspirated. The doctor would use a small needle to collect a sample of cells to evaluate under the microscope. This can lead to a diagnosis in some cases, but can be inaccurate. For a more accurate diagnosis, the mass would need to surgically removed and the whole mass submitted to the laboratory for a pathologist to review. I understand your hesitancy to do so given her age. That being said, cats have a higher rate of cancerous mammary tumors compared to dogs. Furthermore, the mass appears ulcerated in your picture. This can can associated with malignancy as well. Unfortunately, there is a good chance that it is cancerous. I hope this information helps.

Sadly about 85% of masses in cat mammary glands tend to be cancerous. I highly recommend a vet visit so they can examine Tashi. You the can discuss removing the mass for biopsy. Since the same lesion repeatedly fills with fluid, I would suspect a cyst of some sort. While this is not an emergent condition, your cat should be examined by a vet within the next week. Your vet will be able to draw a sample of fluid and cells from the lesion that can be evaluated microscopically, as this will help to determine the underlying cause. Until that time, do not express additional fluid because this can open the lesion up to infection.

Her behaviour may be related to the crusting around her mammary glands, but it could also be something else entirely (pain, infection, stress, etc). If she is still lethargic and/or not eating within the next 24 hours, I would advise taking her to the vet. If there is an actual lump around her nipple, the vet may recommend taking a sample of the lump to see whether it is cancer. There is no way of knowing for sure without an examination though this represents a reason to seek veterinary care. This is usually determined with an examination and a fine needle aspirate (FNA) or a biopsy. Treatment depends on the findings up to that point.
