My cat has mouth cancer. How long can she live without treatment?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely a malignant tumor unfortunately. Cats are very well known for having a mouth tumor called squamous cell carcinoma which carries a poor prognosis. However, it could still be something else and this is quite inside of the mouth unless there is also tumor on the inside. The only way to know is by doing some sampling via fine needle aspiration or possibly a biopsy. If squamous cell carcinoma is confirmed, it is not likely at all to respond to steroids or antibiotics much other than mild decrease in inflammation. Treatment for squamous cell carcinoma is limited by how aggressive this tumor is though sometimes surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy are options. Sorry for the sad news. First off, I'm very sorry that Mama Kitty has mammary tumors! Unfortunately, 90% of mammary tumors in cats are malignant. I think your best option in this case is to enjoy the time you have left with her. Spoil her, give her lots of love and attention, feed her favorite foods (but not ones that are toxic!). Spend as much time with her as you can. Monitor her in regards to her quality of life, and if that starts to decline (i.e. she stops eating, stops drinking, loses more weight, becomes very lethargic, appears to be pain), then it's time to discuss with your vet humane euthanasia. It's a hard thing to do, but it will allow her to go peacefully and without any further pain. You can keep in touch with your vet to discuss her quality of life which will help you make an informed and objective decision. Squamous cell is an aggressive form of malignant cancer. IF it can be completely removed then her chances are good. If the surgery leaves any portion behind, it will likely reoccur in a matter of a 1-3 months. They do have good quality of lives with the loss of eye and vision as the pain and discomfort gets relieved so they tend to feel better. If you do not go through with the surgery then the growth will spread and has potential to take over that side of face and will lead to a poor quality of life.

Survival is only good for Sox, if she has a good quality of life. Not eating well is a sign of not feeling well. She also may be in pain. I think you should ask her (observe her) whether she feels well enough to go on. Your kitty will tell you when it is time by the way she acts. I am so sorry for your trouble and I realize you do not want to lose her. But euthanasia is the best present you can give her if she is so ill. There is no way to predict a survival time.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear that. Lymphoma is an aggressive disease in cats, especially when in the gastrointestinal system and in circulation. Usually even with chemotherapy you are looking at a prognosis of 2-6 months depending on the exact type of lymphoma. You could try prednisolone as a palliative treatment to make her feel better for the time being and perhaps extend her survival time for a few weeks. If she is already anemic, she may also require a blood transfusion making things a bit more complicated. If she is not doing well and you are not interested in pursuing therapy knowing the prognosis then euthanasia is a good option. Let me know if you have further questions regarding her disease. Poor mo, he does look very debilitated. Unfortunately with such a severe lesion, weight loss and infection it may be advisable to consider letting him go very soon as his quality of life is reducing and the prospect of a cure is unlikely

I am so sorry that your cat has terminal liver cancer. The amount of time that he has it difficult to predict without knowing the exact type of tumor, if it is affecting his liver function or any other organs in his body, and if it has spread any place else. Your vet could recheck blood work and/or x-rays to see how the tumor has progressed and they give you more information about the prognosis. Typically, the life expectancy for cats with liver cancer is a few months to a year. Once again, so sorry that Dasher has liver cancer.
