My cat has a lump above his eye. Why does he vomit after eating rats?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Kitty. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. He needs to be examined and the extent of his injuries determined. His eye will need to evaluated. It appears as though his third eyelid may be elevated and possibly damaged. The veterinarian will determine if medication such as antibiotics are warranted. If there is eye disease, such as a corneal ulcer or scratch across the eye, this will require specific treatment. Surgery is possible if there is an infection under the skin such as an abscess. If he is not as active, this is likely because he does not feel well. In the meantime, encourage him to eat and drink. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to cats. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rilian. He will need to see his veterinarian as he most likely has developed an abscess under his skin. Cat teeth are very sharp and puncture the skin introducing bacteria deep inside. The overlying skin heals quickly trapping the infection underneath. A visible swelling will develop. This is what I suspect has happened to Rilian. Most cats will develop a fever and may stop eating. He will likely need antibiotics and possibly to have the abscess lanced. In the meantime, it is fine to shave the overlying hair. I would not apply anything topically aside from water to cleanse the wound though. You can apply warm compresses for 5 minutes 3 times per day if he will tolerate it as well. I hope this information helps!

Since Casper is a young cat this can be a reaction to a rabies vaccination if it was in that location. Sometimes cats get a subcutaneous reaction that can last a month or so. It usually isn't painful and will gradually go away. It also could be an abscess. That is a pocket of puss underneath the skin from a bite it cat scratch wound. They are usually hot to the touch and painful. The runny eyes and loss of energy may be due to a mild cold or upper respiratory infection. That will runs its course in a week or so. A huge lump on his neck could be an abscess, a blicked salivary duct, inflamed or infected salivary gland, a cyst, a tumor, or a swollen lymph node. This needs to be examined by your veterinarian who will likely want to take a bit of tissue or check if and what kind of fluid is in the lump. He will do this with a very thin needle (painless) to determine what kind of mass or lump there is. Not eating is dangerous for a cat as this can cause liver disease in cats in addition to the original cause. Please take your kitty to a veterinarian for an exam today.

Not sure if he goes outside but if he does I would suspect that he has been in a fight with another cat or wild animal and now has developed an infection/abscess. I would advise taking him to your vet immediately to get him evaluated. Not sure if he has a rabies shot either. Your vet can evaluate him after gathering a history and can advise you on what to do. If it's from a fight or bite wounds, he may have to be sedated to explore the injuries further. Treatment may include antibiotics, pain meds, etc. If a bone injury is suspected, x-rays may be needed.
