Outdoor cat has a lump, bald spot, and swelling. Does she need a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered

I have an outdoor cat who at first had a large lump that looked like a bee string. The area is now bald and the swelling looks like it has moved down. Should I take my cat to the vet for this or should I let it take it’s course?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Tombo and for providing a picture, it's very helpful. I suspect that she has an abscess. Typically outdoor cats fight with other cats, and cat bites frequently lead to abscesses. I do think you should take her into the vet to get this treated. I hope this helps!
