Why does my cat gently bite me when I pet her? Is it a love bite?

Some cats can be "love biters" in which they will gently nibble or chew on you without actually biting or acting in an aggressive manner (and it isn't aggression!) This can be a sign of affection in some cats, and it sounds like your cat may be trying to get your attention for more cuddles and pets! (My cat does this too, especially if I haven't been petting her enough or she wants to snuggle.) If, however, his ears are flat, body stiff, and he's trying to get away when biting, then that is a sign that he may be overstimulated and needs some time to himself.

Probably a love bite, but I would not encourage Gray to do that, since they could become harder. Maybe when he does this, stop petting him and see if he moves away or is happier to just sit with you.

Cats can be odd balls when it comes to being petted, displaying affection and expressing themselves. I’m sure you’ve seen cartoons that portray cats only allowing a certain number of pets on the back or only certain parts of the body being touched. This is not abnormal behavior and it does not indicate that he doesn’t like you. It’s possible Cookie is playing rough with you and this is a game in his mind. It’s also possible he’s irritated and taking it out on you! Look at the ears and the tail. A flicking tail alone often means irritation. Ears laid back can mean getting ready to pounce! Pick up a book about cats and familiarize your self with cat body language so that you can pick up on his signals. I hope this helps to point you in the right direction! Thanks for using PetCoach. This is a normal play behavior. (So is reaching out to claw your pants as you walk by or trying to catch your hands with her claws while you pet her.) There are two ways I handle this. One is to stop petting and leave so that she knows play time is over. Honestly it hasn’t really worked yet (she still does it sometimes) and my cat is now 18 mos. What seems to work better is to get up and grab her favorite toy and start playing with that. That is something she CAN bite and claw at and get those natural play behaviors out- without chomping my hands. Hi, yes, some cats do give soft bites as a sign of playing or affection. If you want to prevent this, you need to stop him immediately when he starts to use his mouth. He wants your attention, so when you remove him and ignore him when he does this, he will learn to stop. It sounds like you are doing the right thing. You also need to be consistent and make sure you follow through each time he does this. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Cats are naturally independent and defensive and it is important to understand their body language and needs in order for you both to enjoy the best of each others company. It is unlikely that your cat is being mean but more that she is feeling uncertain as to how to deal with the situation - many cats feel intimidated by being picked up as this removes their ability to escape if they need to and many cats are very defensive if petted under their belly or behind the chest/shoulder area. Watch closely for her cues of swishing the tail or putting back her ears which indicate she is unhappy and allow her to jump up to you when she is ready. The biting of the brush can indicate that she is itchy, cats will lick or bite themselves when an itchy area is scratched or brushed. Some will salivate. Another possibility is that she is biting it because she is getting annoyed. Cats can still be purring but show annoyance by turning their ears, flicking their tail or lightly biting a brush or your hand/arm/fingers. I would stop brushing her when she starts biting the brush or only do it in short intervals so you do not irritate her too much. I wish you the best!
