My cat is losing weight and smells like poop. What could be wrong?

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | neutered | 2 lbs

My cat has lost nearly 15lb and reeks of feces and manure. I'm at a loss of what's going on and I don't have 500+ dollars to take him into a vet right now. I'm afraid I'll lose him soon if I can't figure out what's going on

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Salem. Unfortunately, he sounds very ill. He will need to see a veterinarian. Start with the physical exam and office call. It is worth having him evaluated and seeing if something on his exam can tell the doctor what his problem may be or if it is potentially treatable or not. You can ask for a written estimate of cost prior to authorizing any diagnostics or treatment. This will give you the necessary information to make a decision. Extreme weight loss can be due to conditions such as an over active thyroid gland, diabetes or even cancer. I hope this information helps.

Weight loss is a common feature of many diseases like diabetes, kidney/liver disease, hormonal imbalance (overactive thyroid being the most common) or even a tumor development. I am affraid no one will be able to tell what is going on with Salem without doing at lest clinical examination and some further tests. Urine sample would be the cheapest and the most sensible start of investigation - it can confirm diabetes or give strong indication of kidney disease. In many cases we do not need to go very far with blood tests to make the diagnosis so I would recommend you to take Salem to your local vets and discuss what he needs and what are your financial limits. It is often possible to confirm the diagnosis and provide adequate treatment even on limited funds.

My feral cat is losing weight fast but has a healthy appetite. Why?

Hello. Weight loss of that amount is, unfortunately, going to require some investigation. If the cat’s feeding routine has basically remained unchanged, he has been dewormed....then we need to be looking for other, more serious problems. A thorough physical exam, bloodwork and possibly x-rays. He will likely need sedation for all of this, so presenting him to the vet in a humane trap that he can be sedated while still in the trap is the safest method for all involved. Reasons for dramatic weight loss could include diabetes, intestinal diseases, kidney or liver issues, cancer, etc. I deal with feral cats all the time and it is relatively simple to sedate them through the trap in order to do any procedures necessary. Noah does need to be examined by the veterinarian and he will need bloodworm and a fecal exam at least. The main causes of these symptoms are hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, diabetes, severe dental disease or severe parasites. The mucus in the eyes and mouth may be unrelated to the other symptoms. It's possible his immune system is run down and so opportunistic infections are occurring. Don't wait to have him examined. All those conditions can be successfully cared for if treated early.
