My cat is losing fur on his belly. Is it stress-related overgrooming?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 45 lbs

My cat recently developed a skin concern on his belly where he’s missing fur. It looks buzzed. My photo is not good quality so I apologize. He likes it and always has obsessively cleaned himself. Recently we moved and after quarantine I noticed it. He continues to still eat, drink, and cuddle and does not seem to be in distress but I’m concerned because I’ve never seen this before.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It could be stress-related overgrooming. Some cats are prone to get stressed and as a result they lick themselves excessively. Moving a house can be enough stress for Kai to show this behaviour. Please, try Feliway diffuser for 5-7 days as it often helps in this situations. However, if there is no improvement you should take Kai to your local vets for an appointment.
