My cat is dying from liver failure, not eating. What are my options?

Unfortunately we don’t have enough information about your cats particular case to help you decide things here. Perhaps a consultation would be best to comb through all of the details such as lab work findings (even seeing the normals is quite helpful), medications tried so far, and his physical exam findings would also be helpful. But generally speaking if your pet is ill from liver disease, which can be any condition such as hepatitis, hepatic lipidosis (carries a poorer prognosis unless aggressive treatment is implemented including a feeding tube in most situations), liver cancer or even gallbladder disease can cause elevated liver enzymes, then it’s best fo an abdominal ultrasound to determine what specific liver condition is present. The prognosis of your pet should be determined by your vet and then carefully considered when determining if continued care should be done or if Humane euthanasia is the better option. If you are worried she is dying she needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. Not eating is a serious problem in cats and will only cause her further liver damage, plus she is likely severely dehydrated by the lack of drinking. She needs immediate supportive care and reevaluation to see if anything can be done to save her life and make her more comfortable.

You can have her seen by another vet, who may be able to help you with her, and I would recommend having Kitty seen right away if you decide to do that. It may make you, and her, feel better to have her under the care of a vet in a hospital.

Ultimately, it depends on the underlying cause. If your pet is experiencing hepatic lipidosis (typically caused when not eating) then, yes they can. In order to determine the underlying cause, an abdominal x-ray and or ultrasound would be the best diagnostics. Whitey probably needs a feeding tube, antibiotics, appetite stimulant, and vitamin B12 supplementation. Discuss these diagnostics and treatments with your veterinarian.

First off, I'm very sorry Iggy has lung cancer! If he's stopped eating, unfortunately it may be time to let him go. It's actually very serious when a cat stops eating because they will develop a fatty liver after 72 hours of not eating. A fatty liver is fatal without treatment. It's not fair for him to starve to death either. You need to look at his quality of life, and ask yourself if he's having a good quality of life when he's not eating. Starving is also very painful to an animal. With the signs you are mentioning, I honestly would be thinking it's time to consider letting him go peacefully via humane euthanasia. This will ensure that he passes peacefully without any further pain or suffering. There are vets who come to your house to provide this service, so this would allow you to have him pass in the comfort of his home. I would see if your vet makes house calls for euthanasia, or if there is a mobile euthanasia vet service in your area.
