My cat hasn't used the litter box after spay surgery. Should I worry?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 months and 13 days old | 8 lbs

My cat was spayed yesterday—I picked her up at 3:30, so about 29 hours ago. She is eating relatively normally and has had some water, but she hasn’t used the litter box at all and I’m worried something is wrong.

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question. Binx would have been fasted before surgery, so that may be why she hasn't used the litter box yet. It's very good she has eaten and is drinking, and I do expect she should use the litter box soon. If she hasn't in the next 24 hours, then I would be worried and have her seen by a vet. Thanks for visiting Petcoch. This presentation post neuter is actually pretty normal. In fact following any general anesthesia procesure we can expect a pet to not need to go potty for up to 24 hrs, and this is because the inhalant anesthetic medicine causes a short term ileus (slow moving gut). As long as Dino is not attempting to go and can't (straining), then I would not be concerned. He likely will go within the next 24 hrs.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! While not normal, this is somewhat common and sometimes is because of the anesthesia or pain medications administered. For this reason, I would give it another 12 hours before worrying too much. If still not going to the bathroom then, consider having her examined by a veterinarian then. This is very common for a cat to go without using the litterbox after a stressful vet visit like this. No worries. Unless you see him actively straining, then there is nothing to worry about. However, it is important to consider using an e-collar if she is going to be left unattended to try to prevent her from licking at the incision and causing an infection or opening her incision. My cat is lethargic, not eating/drinking 48 hrs after spay. Serious?

While you can see a decrease in appetite and potentially drinking after a spay, her appetite should have been back to normal or close to normal by now. It's very serious she hasn't eaten or drank in 48 hours, and that suggests something is quite wrong. I would take her into a vet immediately, as she may have a post-surgical complication. My new kitten won't use litter box or drink water after spay.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Savannah. She will need to see her veterinarian for an initial kitten exam and to start her vaccinations and deworming. It sounds like she feels well based on how you described her behavior. She has likely been stressed by coming to a new home. I suspect she will use the litterbox soon. My cat just got neutered. Why isn't he using the litter box at all?

It depends on when your guy had surgery and if you mean urine/feces or both. If recent it could be anesthesia related as this can slow the gi tract down and/or he may be a little tired from the procedure/sedation. It could also be pain related. Do you notice anything abnormal about the neuter site (redness, swelling, discharge)? If he is eating and drinking normally then he will re establish normality soon. If he is not feeling well or you are worried about the surgery site it would be best to have him checked by your vet. My sick cat is recovering but hasn't used the litter box. What to do?

It is not uncommon when pets have not been eating or drinking well to have more extended time between visits to the box. It your kitty was a bit dehydrated from being sick this will also mean less urine in the box too. As it seems that your kitty is feeling better with the care your vet provided i would give it a little time. If he or she is eating then things should normalize. If he or she starts to feel sick again then dehydration may make things worse, and a recheck with your vet is then advised. My cat won't eat, drink, or use litter after moving. What can I do?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is somewhat expected to some extent though it is important to make sure she is drinking water so she does not get dehydrated. I would encourage her to drink and you may get more than 1 litter box to encourage her to use it. If she does not improve within 2-3 days, have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment in case there is something else going on. Best of luck!
