Why is my cat licking the carpet, grooming, and scratching more?

Your kitty is likely a nervous or stressed cat, especially if stressful events (new neighborhood cat, new boyfriend, new baby, mvoing, removing or adding furniture, new puppy , etc.) have happened before she started the excessive licking. This licking pattern would be typical for overgrooming. Your vet needs to rule out parasites, fungal and bacterial infections. If there is none of these then you can try to help your cat by removing anything stressful in the house that can be removed and placing Feliway dispensers in the areas she spends most of the time. Feliway is a pheromone that makes cats happy and takes away stress. You will need to do this for at least two months before you will see success. If this does not work, then your vet can do some medication trials to see whether she will stop the overgrooming.

I recommend checking his mouth for any bad breath, tartar or gingivitis or a broken tooth. This can also happen when a patient is nauseous. Has he recently vomited, been drooling or experienced a lack of appetite? If not, his behavior likely not concerning. Many cats will do this as an extension of grooming. It can be a compulsive habit or just a random behavior the cat will display from time to time. Assess him for the problems that I have mentioned. Since you are noticing multiple locations affected, I recommend to have her examined by her veterinarian and checked for external parasites. Allergies or anxiety could also cause similar symptoms. Anxiety licking tends to be on the lower legs and the belly. They generally don’t scratch more due to anxiety. Hello! Cats can start this behavior which we call barbering or over grooming. To my knowledge there is no specific known cause but it has been linked to stress and allergies. Since this is thought to be more of a behavioral issue the options for treatment are centered around environmental enrichment and/or behavior modifying medications. I would recommend discussing this further with your regular veterinarian so they can also evaluate Tess' to rule out things like a primary dermatological problem. Some have discussed switching to a hypoallergenic food to see if that helps. I have also met many owners who choose not to do anything because like Tess they aren't causing trauma to themselves. That is a strange behavior, especially if she is attempting to bite at her legs. If she is overweight or older, it may be that she can't actually reach her legs, and so is biting the carpet in frustration instead. If she seems painful, in distress, or the behavior came on suddenly, seeking out an exam with your vet is best to rule out any issues such as pain, illness, injury, etc that could be causing it. If she checks out healthy, trying to find ways to distract her at home through fun interactive toys, or adding in a pheromone diffuser such as Comfort Zone to help decrease stress may help resolve the behavior as well.

If she is licking you more often when she is in heat, then it's possible that spaying her could help with the behavior. If Samantha licks year round, then it's possible that she does have some stress or anxiety, or she may simply be an affectionate cat. 10-20 minutes of grooming herself or her brother doesn't seem particularly unusual to me and I wouldn't necessarily think this is an indication of stress or anxiety unless she is also showing other signs of being upset like pinning ears, running and hiding, or swishing her tail. You could always try a pheromone diffuser like Feliway to help with anxiety.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach. I would recommend a vet visit for Sparrow. The first thing is to determine if her licking and grooming is related to itching or behavior. Some cats may overgroom when stressed and it can become habitual as well. If she is truly itchy she may need some diagnostic testing to determine why. Cats can have allergic disease that causes itching and scratching. As she has been diagnosed with asthma this may be the case for Sparrow. Other causes of itching can be parasites such as fleas, lice or mites, fungal or bacterial infection. After going over Sparrows history and performing an exam the vet will discuss the best options for Sparrow. This may including skin scrapes, fungal culture, skin cytology or allergy testing.
