Can L-lysine or CBD oil help my cat with herpes or allergies?

I would have to respectfully disagree with that statement. I have used Lysine for years and many cats have improved with it. The limitations are that it probably only works for Herpes infection (not other upper respiratory viruses in cats, and we don't often do testing to know for sure that it is Herpes virus causing the clinical signs), and it only works to slow down the replication of the virus (not eliminate the infection). Historically, Lysine has been encouraged to be used among cats, especially those that tend to have upper respiratory flare ups due to underlying viral disease. Lysine was thought to be an immune-booster and thought to help prevent these flare ups from occurring or reduce the symptoms when they did. Majority of evidence that exists supporting this is anecdotal, with those in the scientific community more on the fence about its effectiveness. We know quite surely it isn’t causing any harm in most product formulations. Bottom line is that the majority of cats function and live long healthy lives with or without Lysine. Proper diet and exercise are all that should be needed to obtain the nutrients necessary to thrive.

I'm so sorry to hear about your kitties! Unfortunately, there is no evidence that homeopathic remedies like these work. My other concern is that this is a pretty high concentration of alcohol. I'm sure the dose is small, but still, I worry that it could be potentially harmful. If you are looking for a natural support for herpes virus, I recommend trying Lysine. This is an amino acid that we think may help interrupt the herpes life cycle. It is very safe for any cat in the household and may be used long term to help prevent flare-ups. A few veterinary approved products I like are Vetoquinol Viralys (L-Lysine) Oral Gel for Cats and Duralactin Feline L-lysine Cat Supplement. Just follow the directions on label. If any cat has squinting eyes, is not eating, or seems very lethargic, it is time to visit your vet as these signs may indicate a secondary eye ulcer or bacterial infection that requires medication. You can give Charlie an L-lysine supplement - this is an amino acid that has been shown to help the immune system fight off respiratory infections more effectively. Enisyl and Viralys are both good brands, and can be purchased over the counter without a prescription - just follow the dosing instructions on the label based on your cat's weight.

It's probably not a "cold". It is most likely herpes virus. If it is herpes virus, it will never go completely away. They will have recurring episodes. All you can do to minimize future episodes it is to reduce stress. You can try some Feliway diffusers, they may help. I would recommend talking to your vet about supplementing Lola with the amino acid lysine. I'm not sure of the exact virus your vet thinks she has, but if he suspects herpes virus, lysine can be very useful in helping to control the clinical signs of the disease, including sneezing and watery eyes. If Lola does have herpes (and many cats do) she will never completely be cured, but lysine can help her get over the symptoms faster.

Hello. A probiotic is a very good idea. You might also want to start a L- lysine supplement. This amino acid was used primarily as an adjunct therapy for the feline herpes virus, but it may be useful here, too. All pet retailers carry various types of L-lysine.
