Is my cat with kidney disease on Semintra & Ipakitine in pain?

There is no medication that specifically treats chronic kidney disease. Changing to a therapeutic diet and increasing water consumption can help, and treatment is focused mainly on alleviating clinical signs like nausea or decreased appetite. High blood pressure can occur secondary to kidney disease and if Percy had high blood pressure then a medication might be prescribed. Urinary tract infections are also pretty common in cats with kidney disease so your vet may want to check Percy’s urine periodically.

I recommend a urine screen to determine his urinary tract health and any cause for pain or discomfort in this area. Kidneys are only rarely damaged by urinary obstruction but if there is evidence of issues, a blood test may be required also. Wet food, calming supplements and pain relief may be recommended depending on the results

Hi and thanks for posting! The time each cat has when first diagnosed with chronic kidney disease does vary on the age of the cat and stage of the kidney disease. Cats that have this can do very well with great supportive and supplemental care. Kidney disease can be managed with prescription diets, certain kidney friendly vitamins, SQ fluid administration, and blood pressure medication if needed. While kidney failure is not typically painful, other secondary issues they can acquire may be, such as urinary or lung infections. Sometimes kidney disease can cause nausea which can be uncomfortable but not necessarily painful. Nausea is often treated in these patients with anti vomiting medications. Kidney failure patients may pass in their sleep, but not always. They can develop serious complications from compromised kidney function which can lead some owners to humanely euthanize them towards the end due to decreased quality of life. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Semintra has actions of decreasing blood pressure and decreasing the protein loss with kidney disease. Therefore, if no kidney disease is present, and no high blood pressure is present, then you might see signs of low blood pressure or changes in the sodium and potassium. These are unlikely to occur but possible. Foaming urine is a sign of protein in the pee. Has the urine been checked for protein? I would recommend a Urine Protein:Creatinine Ration to properly assess if protein loss is present. Checking the blood pressure is a good idea as well (although somewhat difficult to perform in stressed cats accurately). I would probably recommend starting on a kidney food as a early management/prevention vs. starting on Semintra, unless your vet has a high suspicion clinically that Nomar has kidney disease (weight loss, dehydration despite drinking/peeing a lot, overly dilute urine, etc.). Kidney values only go up once 75% of the kidneys are affected, so we have to rely on other indicators to catch kidney disease early. Talk to your vet about IRIS staging. Kidney disease is definitely a possible cause of back pain and an increase in drinking. It can also make her feel bad and less active. I recommend taking her to the vet sometime soon, because some causes of kidney disease like infections and stones can be successfully treated and further damage to the kidneys can be prevented. Poor girl. There is a natural anti-anxiety medication that you can try first before resorting to stronger anxiety medication from your vet. The product is called Zylkene and is available on Amazon.com. Ask your vet if this is appropriate for your pet Sabre to try to reduce her anxiety so that she can continue receiving her much needed treatment for kidney failure. I would also encourage you , if you have not done so already, to keep her on her kidney prescription diet, which is the mainstay treatment for pets with kidney failure. Usually what I tell my clients is that the moment to consider euthanasia is when our pets stop doing the things that they love. For example, they develop poor appetite, stop interacting with you, or stop being herself in general. Usually that is the right time to consider euthanasia especially if there is nothing else that can be done to improve her status. Good luck!
